catchte Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 It Catchte, and I'm the new guy on the forum. Western N.C. starting to fish in the lakes hereabouts. I'm 77 young, retired, and looking to add a fish finder, or deapth finder, (I know so little, I don't even know the proper name) on my small bass boat, aluminum, 60 hp, 16ft. long. Primarily I want to know the deapth of the water, see where the fist are, and find productive structure. I have never used one before and know very little (nothing) about them. I don't need anything fancy, GPS or the like, and I generally don't fish in water more than 60 or 70 feet deep. I need something that is easy to read or interpret, and clear enough for old eyes to see. Buying it on a social security budget if you get my meaning. Hope you can give me an idea where to start and any recommendations or suggestions for purchase or use. Thanks alot for helping the new guy............... Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 7, 2012 Super User Posted April 7, 2012 I know guys that have had a sonar unit for many years and don't know anything about it other than looking at the depth reading. There are lots of simple sonar units available for less than $200-even some for less than $100. Just look through a Bass Pro Shops catalog or Cabelas' catalog and get one in your price range, but purchase it either on Sale there or do your shopping at a marine electronics dealer on-line for a better price. Visit the Lowrance web site and read the tutorial about how to read a LCR unit and you will be way ahead of a lot of people. Here is the link to that tutorial: http://www.lowrance....Sonar-Tutorial/ Quote

Then I will send you an old one that I took off a 14 ft aluminum. How's that for staying in a budget? 2 Quote

William Rossi Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I would look at the Humminbird Helix series or Garmin Striker series. Both good bang for the buck Quote
