OK, so I am totally revamping my Jig fishing because of my experience this weekend. Long story short, I am gonna set up one rod with flouro and still have one with braid. I fish all other bottom contact baits with my finger on the line(no braid), because that is the way my father taught me. LOL. My worm rod has a core50 on it which I can palm and have a finger on the line. With my jig rods, I use a curado 200e7 so that I purposely can not have a finger on the line because the first time with braid I about lost a finger tip. Now with the flouro, I think I want to have a finger on the line.......

So my question(s): With your worm rod do you have a finger on the line? And if so what about your jig rod, if you use other than braid?

This might lead to me selling a couple curado 200's and buying cores/chronarchs, so it is an important decision.

Thanks for your help.

Wassup?

Could have sent this to rods & reels, but regardless...not "General"

And now the answer: Braid with a foot or so of fluoro leader.

And forget about that finger thing...

I prefer fluoro with jigs. I can't really feel any extra bites by placing my finger on my line and it feels uncomfortable to me. I tried braid but didn't like it because it always bellies if there is even the slightest wind. I wouldn't go through that trouble just so you could put a finger on the line but that's your choice.

I figured it was not rod, reel, line related and it was not tackle related, so the obvious place would be general. After all it is a general question....lol

Yea, we talked about that.....But you don't put your finger on any line, so what about soeone who does? LOL Remember the first time we fished, it was worm fishing 101!

Jeff,

I normally put a finger on the line when I'm fishing with a spinning rod. I think it helps me detect those subtle bites finesse fishing. I however never use a finger with jigs. I use braid and have never noticed any problems detecting bites with it. I am a pretty good line watcher tho.

Btw...nice fish!!!!!

Many will tell you fishing a Texas Rig is not similar to fishing a Jig but I strongly disagree. What I mean by the two being similar is what you are feeling for!

Anyone can feel the taps, thumps, or bumps and it's easy to see line movements. Its the subtle bite that go unnoticed, the bite where a bass simply inhaled you T-rig/jig and does not move.

You say your T-rig setup is a Core50 because you can palm it and place you finger on the line, I say setup your jig rod the same.

I ALWAYS fish with my finger on the line, except moving baits...

Yeah braid can suck when it digs in to your finger but it will heal lol, and it has only happened once... If you are use to fishing with your finger on the line I would make all other setups the same. I couldnt imagine fishing without my finger on the line, it just feels natural for me.

Coming from using fluorocarbon line for Jigs to PowerPro Braid, and I have found that hook up ratio went up. I don’t need to set the hook hard, and I felt Braid is more sensitive which allows me to detect bites better than fluor.

My thinking exactly.....If I use a finger on the line with my t-rigs, then I should with my jigs, sans braid! With braid I have too many cuts in the finger! LOL

How? Dont you move your finger when you reel/hookset? I agree with Catt on this one. I think we may fish alot alike. Anyway, I palm the reel with one or two fingers on the exposed bland and my pointer finger under the line. When I reel I move my finger so I do not cut my finger. Same for a hookset. Ill show you how I fish a jig first hand on April 22. :) Its nothing amazing though

I've had a cut so bad that it was in almost and 1/8 and had to have my buddy pull it out.

That happened to me because I didnt move my fingers in time...

Maybe I do unconsciously......I know I fell for the bite on non braid bottom contact lures with my left pointer finger, other than that it is all subconscious!

Maybe I am wrong, I have used braid for my jigs and T-Rigs, when I have to pause the bait for long periods of time, I have a hard time watching the line, I have always had my finger under the line so that if a fish does just vacume it up and not move, the slack tells me to set the hook, like you though Jeff it only took one time to learn a valuable lesson.

I have learned to position my hand, palm up, under the rod, pinch the braid between my finger and thumb, if I need a quick hook set the line will pull free from between them.

2 different schools of how to hold a casting rod; old school you have a few fingers in front of the reel with line on top of your index finger. New school you palm the reel, most rods may not have a fore grip today.

There isn't a rod made that is more sensitive than your finger tip. If want to detect the slightest bite, your finger tip is your best choice and old school technique with a casting reel is how I hold a jig rod or a worm rod. Look at the best jig fisherman around, they use their finger.

I like flouro on my jig rods, except for flipping heavy cover I use braid. I can understand the finger thing because I used to do it all the time on Texas rig and jigs. That was with mono and the feel wasnt that good with mono. now with low stretch flouro and braid, the finger isn't needed as much. I still use the finger, but not nearly as much as I used too. I use it more now for weightless rigs (senkos, flukes, etc) with flouro. I wouldn't think there is a need to change reels.

Small hands man. Anything bigger than a 50 size reel and I can't get my finger in position. This thread may cost me some bucks!!!
