  1. Lot of things go into what size jig I choose, depth being one of them....but not always. I have fished a 1oz jig in a foot or less of water, and a 1/16th oz. jig in 30 FOW.
  2. I bought a new 170 in 2007, at the time I "thought" it was all I needed, and in reality at the time it was.........huge upgrade over my Pelican bass raider. But..... It's cramped, small and slow. I have recently begun saving for a 175....which is what I should have bought in the first place. To be fair to my 170.........it has been a good boat. I have had no problems with it that were not my own doing. I just want something with a little more room, and I have looked the 175 over quite a few times in person, everything is easier to work on, and get to than on my 170. Things like bilge/live well pumps, batteries, etc.... has more storage, bigger decks, a few more features that the 170 does not have.
  3. I cut it off behind the "gills"
  4. As soon as I get some scuba gear and an underwater camera, I will post mine.
  5. Fish in clear water bite the same things as fish in dirty water. Stealth is the most important thing in clear water, unless they are locked on a bed, if they know your there.............game over.
  6. I like my 7'11" Mojo just fine. I don't find it heavy at all for a nearly 8' rod that is meant to rip bass out of the thickest cover you can find them in.
  7. I am comfortable fishing the bank out to the deepest water in the lake, and everything in between. Laydowns, grass holes, docks, rocks, points, humps, sunken brush, mats, drop-offs, pads, ditches, culverts, channels, seawalls, bridges, cat tails, boat ramps, sail boats, weed lines, stumps, misc. "junk" in the water, and where ever else bass live, I will fish.
  8. I use the Zoom Horny Toad hooks
  9. I picked up 4 new ones my self thanks to the St Croix rod promotion at Christmas time, as well with some used Shimano reels to put on them Mojo 7' MH/Mod casting rod and a used Citica 201D, for shallow, lipless, and GP cranking Mojo 6'6" M/F casting rod and a used Citica 201E, for jerkbaits, top water, and misc.... Eyecon 6'3" M/XF spinning rod and a Shimano Sedona 2500, for dock skipping, small jerkbaits/topwaters, vertical drop shotting. Rage 7'1" MH/F casting rod, and a used Citica 201E that I swapped the gears out for a set of 7:1 Curado 201E7 gears, for frogging, swim jigs, pitching, jigs, etc....
  10. I'll have a spinning rod in my hand with light line almost as much , if not more often than a flipping stick with 50lb braid. It's all about the tools for the job. To each his own. You want to exclusively fish for bass with light tackle, even in situations were you will lose........got for it. Ask yourself this though, would you hunt deer with a .22LR.........sure it will kill one, but..................OR would you take the engine out of a car with nothing more than a pair of vise grips, a crescent wrench and a screw driver..........yeah it will work but............
  11. Except for right after ice out, and very late in the season. I throw TW all year long.
  12. I use braid exclusively as main line, with fluorocarbon leaders as needed. I change the braid out when......#1 it gets low enough on the reel so I am down to the backing on a long cast, or #2 it starts looking pretty ratty. Often time in situation #2 I just take the braid off and reverse it, putting the used stuff on the bottom. When I use a fluoro leader, I tie them long, so I get a few reties out of them before I have to tie a new leader. They usually start at 5' or so, and get changed when I am down to a foot left.
  13. This is my system.......take it for what it's worth 10lb braid = 6,8,or 10 lb leaders 15lb braid = 8,10, or 12lb leaders 20lb braid = 10,12, or 15lb leaders 30lb braid = 15,17, or 20lb leaders 50lb braid = 20lb leaders
  14. I prefer the right tool for the job. LMAO at the "thrill of the fight" crowd. I am in the "thrill of the fish in the boat" crowd.
  15. $20+ dollar crankbaits and jerkbaits. For the simple reason of................ things with teeth.
  16. I like them. My favorite is the Little John squarebill, the Russ Lane Fat poppa, and while not hardbaits, the Bronze eye frogs....both the popper and regular.
  17. I like Seaguar Red Label. I have no idea how it is for a main line, as I only use it as leader material. But, it has not let me down. IMHO it's much much better than Vanish, or Trilene 100%, which are the other two FC lines I used to use.
  18. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I have had days where it's the difference between fish in the boat or not. Dropshotting has replaced it for me as the "go to" technique when I just need a bite.
  19. I don't need three, 2 will get it done moat of the time, and for some just 1 Plastics : Green pumpkin, and June bug Jigs: Black/blue, and Brown/green Spinnerbaits: Chart/White Lipless cranks: Red craw, and a translucent naturalish looking baitfish color
  20. This ..............I have the same rod, and while it's not my only spinning rod, it would be the one I'd choose if I could only have one.
  21. Credit Cards in the hands of young people = disaster 9 times out of 10. Been there, done that. Take the advice here on not spending more than you can pay off as gold. I got my first card(s) when I was 18.........by 22 I was in a hole that seemed endless, took me till I was almost 30 to get out of it. I am 37 now, and the cards are only used in REAL emergencies , and get paid off ASAP. Good credit starts by not F-ing it up the first chance you get.
  22. 7' MH/F St Croix.........I have two, an Avid and LTB, one that I have and not yet used, a Rage, and fished a few others like the Triumph, Mojo, and Premier.
  23. but I managed to get my first bass of 2013. Just a small keeper, but on an 18" rod, 2lb test line and #14 size jig/hook, and through a 5" hole was exciting for about 15 seconds.
  24. D series are my favorite Shimano's. Tanks, and cast as good as anything. I have a Curado 201 DPV, and it was like new when I bought it used....here I think and paid $100 for it.
  25. Thats what I think too, last year when looking for a couple cheaper rods, I just wasn't impressed with the Sellus or Convergance, but the Lightning Rod Shock has been a pleasant suprise in that price range.
