  1. Would a split ring addition and a hook change be significantly beneficial?
  2. Fishing my local dam today and the water was way down, bout a foot lower than normal. This exposed some plant life near the bank, and as I lifted my spinnerbait out of the water from my first cast, I looked down three foot ahead of me and saw a Devil's Horse lodged into the branch of some plant sticking out of the water. It has a black back with black stripes and a white bottom. Fairly decent shape all things considered. One thing I noticed is the points of the treble hooks all have a slight bend at the tip of them. Never seen that before.
  3. I disagree with imanidiot777's name, as his post shows he has intelligence. I do a lot of night fishing, and in some of my gallery pics you'll see me with a wig lamp (headband light). For me, its a must have when navigating trails and woods when i am bank fishing, and for the reasons he brought up. As far as casting at night goes... I agree with most everybody who has replied; you should be able to hear and feel when your cast is about to hit water and feel the line slowing up and descending using your rod.
  4. The past few years my dad and I haven't done much because of his health, he just doesn't have the gas anymore. With fall approaching I can see us using the canoe for activities often as the weather will cool.
  5. This is some advice I gave to a guy who came down from Ny for a couple months.... The way I get permission is worked out pretty well. I show up wearing nice clothes, absolutely no fishing gear on first meet. Knock on peoples doors and start a convo, I tell em I like to fish and am interested in their property. Few tips tho... Tell them the only thing you take when you leave is trash and pictures. Let them know you practice catch and release UNLESS they have certain kinds of fish they actually want rid of. Sucks if you like to keep em but the best ponds with the giant fish are usually stocked by the owner and they wanna keep the fish in it. Also, mention you'll only fish by yourself or with a partner, and the partner will never come by himself or bring other people. If you aint the lazy type, offer to weedeat the banks once a month. Thats basically it man, show up wanting to talk only, be nice and look nice, talk like you listened in school, and you got a good chance. Lotta people dont like to use my method, but all they can say is no lol. Good luck.
  6. My dad is a disabled vet, and hasn't had an active life for 15+ yrs due to cancer. His stories of canoeing the local rivers always intrigued me, and when he told me he was buying me this as a gift I got so excited as I'll be able to take him out to the places of his yesteryear... Grab n go! This is a large canoe that has an aluminum skeleton on the inside for extra stability and support. The canoe has two main seats, front and back with a portable seat situated in the center (see pic) that simply drops right in. It is a folding seat, it's red, so you have to look closely because it blends into the red background There is a bait bucket with an oxygenator that works off the 12V battery to keep your bait alive. The new front bucket seat is very comfortable and detaches if you want to use the regular seat for just your basic canoeing. This one comes with the boat along with the portable red one pictured in the center. A nice Garmin, hend held GPS, complete with the box and in excellent condition is also included and perfect for marking important or special locations, good fishing spots, or where you launched from if you're primitive camping. (Fishing poles pictured not included) The motor mount quickly comes off with two wing nuts. Also, the motor tilts up if you want to switch to to paddle. Not only comes with the two paddles pictured, but it also comes with an extra portable French paddle that quickly assembles and disassembles if needed. The Kubota motor propels the canoe quickly and quietly or slowly and stealthily and runs all day on a good, freshly charged, deep cycle battery (Battery not included). The beam is wide for stability and this canoe has a keel to keep it tracking in the water with minimal drift. The canoe has a strong aluminum rail at the top, and for such a sizable canoe it is easy for two people to manage. In fact, one fit person can manage alone if you have good balance - I did. The center beam has two positionable pole holders that adjust up/down and they additionally pivot 360 degrees. Grab your poles, drop in a deep-cycle 12v battery, and you can leave my home and take it right to the lake and fish. This is a really nice canoe setup that is big enough to give you the room you want and will surely appreciate. Items included: Motor, Kubota Motor mount, (removable) GPS, hand-held Front folding seat with back (removable) Portable drop-in foldable seat 2 standard paddles 1 portable French paddle 1 live bait setup with 12v aerator 2 Fishing pole holders 3 childrens life vests 1 adult life preserver Anchor and rope We've called and reserved a pickup time on monday. I have plans to browse for a depth finder suitable for this rig. This topic is open for discussion on your opinions of the rig, what modifications I could make, or tips on the operation and ownership of the rig.
  7. Guys, the story is true... just with a lil flavoring to make it fun lol! My wife doesn't nag me about my addiction, she laughs it off. I am enjoying my new combo, in fact it's my lightest yet. I'm of a smaller stature (5'7) and the Lew's reel fits my hand quite nicely. Being a bank fisherman, I only bring one rod as mobility is key to the places I fish, and the 7' mh rod gives me a lot of versatility.
  8. My wifes a zoom bait away from filing for divorce! On the way to the park with my wife and daughter, I hear " Bait shop iz on way der". I shudder as I turn around only to see my daughter sucking on her passy. I see him no where. I thought to myself "Well, I did run out of jig heads, oh and I wanted to get some sunline." A small "hehehe" is let out that only I seem to hear. I tell my wife i'll be out in a second, and make my way in..... "Hey Josh, I know you've been looking to have a rod made, but I got these smoke rod on sale real cheap." I pick up a 7' mh micro guide smoke and a rush of euphoria courses through my body. I tried to fight it, I really did, but I ask "That Lew's Team pro I held the other day, let me put it on this and get a feel." As I find the balance point, I feel like the apprentice in Fantasia, playing with the sorcerers wand while he sleeps. As I loosen up the reel seat, the voice I know all too well says "By dis, u b gran massa fishman!" The clerk sees concern in my face as i'm picturing the doghouse in my head, and instead of sending me on my way, he enables me by saying "I'll even do the paperwork for the free boat bag from Lew's." The "hehehe" rings out again as i'm laying twenties on the counter and walk out the door with my new rig, sunline, a few packs of jig heads, a popper, and a live pointer. I drop my head in shame as my wife gives me a look of disgust on the way to the truck. The sting of the slap hurts, but not more than when I recovered from it in time to see the bait monkey run underneath the shop, laying in wait for me to come again.
  9. I go with t-rig weightless, or if I need to fall a lil quicker I use this as to not affect the flutter action...
  10. I hope i'm not hijacking the thread, as the title isn't specific, but has anyone had experience with the Team Lew's Pro? Held on at a shop the other day and felt good in my small hands.
  11. In my opinion, you hit the nail on the head when you said anchor. Take a texas rig for example. I'm a big believer that a heavier weight will dampen strikes to your rod because the weight is in front of the hook; lighten the bullet up and smaller strikes ping back to you easier. As you said, on a drop shot rig, the hook is in between you and the weight. A heavier weight, depending on your technique on using the rig, will pull the line tighter during jiggles and if the bass strikes during a tight line, you will feel it much more than if there wasn't as much tension on the line. My .02c, 98 more plus tax gets you a mcdouble.
  12. I have a problem with this... Not with what you said flyfisher. Companies such at St. Croix have massive amounts of money and time into their research and development, if they're going to give rods a label where certain rods are designed to work best, then the labels given should be correct. Maybe I can explain my opinion better this way... Say I pull up the St. Croix website. I go with their opinion and buy their jig rod, and find out that it is terrible for jig fishing, yet their spinnerbait rod works great for jig fishing. Why call it a jig fishing rod if another rod can outperform it? Although, one could also say different strokes for different folks, and my rant would be moot. Carry on.
  13. I lower them, to the point where if I was to cast with it, parts of the backlash would slap my face lol. Swallow your pride, crank your brakes up and start small and work your way up, your line and agitation level will thank you.
  14. I'm a bank fisherman with no smarts. I'll throw a hook somewhere and have to break a knot, and dang if I won't throw right back into it again, and again, and again..."I'm gonna show that log/rock/weed". I've easily lost 50 dollars in the water some long days. Unless I plan on going swimming, I can't afford to buy high dollar lures/bait at the rate i'm capable of losing them. The body of water I fish doesn't allow swimming or wading, but I take my chances occasionally. My decision may change if I was on the inside looking out (in a boat.)
