Your accomplishment should matter to you. Who cares what any one else thinks?
And if you really want to get philosophical....what purpose does catching a big bass serve? You aren't feeding your family with that fish (I'm assuming).
I just don't know why people let this kind of stuff bother them so much? It doesn't affect me in any way if someone's fish is a pound less than they say. The only weighing I care about is tournaments and that's all on the same scale so it doesn't matter.
I've had days in the past fishing for 12 hours without a bite. That hasn't happened in awhile so maybe I've gotten a lot better. I would still do it, though!
They get weaker and weaker when the are bent out of shape and back in shape. I have both Strike King and Booyah spinnerbaits for different things and I have never had a problem with either. It all depends on how much they get bent out of shape and how often. Sometimes you get unlucky and a few fish in a row get hooked in a way that makes them bend it completely out. If that happens 4-5 times I would be prepared for it to break soon. Sometimes you go on a 50 fish run before you even have to worry.
I don't think he was necessarily implying an Elite competitor. Anyone could have an axe to grind. I think that scenario is HIGHLY unlikely, though. Electrical fire is the most probably cause.
Simple answer: comfort. It is much cooler with skin covered by breathable, yet UV resistant, fabric. I hate having any oily or greasy feeling on my skin.
Also, if I put sunscreen on my face I still break out even as an adult. The only place I use sunscreen is my legs if I am wearing shorts.
People don't even have the simplest courtesy. If someone is bad at backing a boat trailer in and takes a few tries, I don't get too upset. Everyone has to learn sometime if that's what they wanna do. The worst is people who drive the boat on and then stay on the ramp for 10 minutes to tie everything down. Idling in front of the ramp blocking other boats from going in and out; taking up multiple lanes on boat ramps that have that option; parking trucks/trailers in places that screw everyone else over; all commonplace.
There is a Dick's Sporting Goods in Bartonsville now that just opened a few months ago. That will definitely have the most tackle in the area by far.
As for bank fishing or kayak: Delaware River, Minsi Lake.
Went to Francis E Walter Reservoir for the first time ever on Saturday, caught 15 bass and a nice sized carp. Caught them on squarebills early and flipping bushes early and then on tubes later on. The wind started HOWLING and created a nice current so the fish were easy to find. Caught a 5lb carp on my finesse tube setup. I've never had a fish fight like that; peeled off my drag like 6 times.
Video will be coming out later this week once I have had time to edit it!
If you've fished enough to know the basics of fishing, and you are with someone who knows the river and how to do well, I think you'll be just fine. You will learn really, REALLY fast that way, too.
