  1. Brent you are right that any system will only support a biomass dependent on many factors. You are also right that selective harvest can be a valuable method of keeping a system in balance. Where you are wrong in my opinion and Mb 1984's (our resident expert) among others, is how that selective harvest is managed. Eat a bunch of the 12" fish and leave those big ones time to grow!
  2. A-Jay I use the delivery system, just a different brand! Folgers Black Silk is my current drug of choice.
  3. The kids most at risk are the ones too young to be vaccinated. Measles is no threat to those vaccinated. EDIT: After some quick research; kids can be inoculated at between 12 and 15 months; second dose at 4-5 years; between doses vacine is 90-95% effective; vaccine is not 100% effective; as the percentage of vaccinated goes down the incidence of disease increases at a much higher percentage.
  4. Redline this is just too political and divisive to last very long here. There are many that think big pharmaceutical companies and big government are not qualified or empowered to make decisions concerning the health their children. We will not solve that here.
  5. I have 4 PQs that have served very well for years. They are great reels for the money. I really like the Tatula though, and that will be my next purchase.
  6. Ww2farmer if you get a chance try the SR9c. With the 17 round mag it feels much like the 9. With the 10 round and the finger extension it shoots well and is fairly easy to carry. I love mine and would not take a new Glock 19 or 26 for it.
  7. I have used them for years. They are a good bait for the money. They are not as soft as Senkos. This is both good and bad. Most of the time I use the Stik-os. There are times when the Senkos are a better choice IMO.
  8. I love them all equally!
  9. Brent you can believe what you want. How will harvesting the largest fish in the lake increase the numbers of large fish in the lake? Keeping some of the smaller fish and leaving the bigger ones alone is how lakes are managed for big bass.
  10. Brent if you harvest bass to the limit that are 15" or greater, your chances of catching 4 pounders will not go up. Slot limits are a far better approach to managing fish populations and increasing numbers of bigger fish.
  11. That may be true of some, but for most It really is matter of having the right tool for the job and the convenience it provides. I grow tired of those who continue to tell us how foolish we are for wanting the best we can afford to pursue our target. 0119 you are not at all reluctant to tell us how elitist bass fishermen are, and there are some who fit that stereotype. There are also are some who think that because bass fishermen put more emphasis on gear than they do they are somehow not worthy of respect. That may not be elitism, but there's an element of condescension that is just as offensive.
  12. Even if the pass play works, it is still a bad call. Throwing the ball in that situation makes no sense. Run the ball, use the remainder of the time, and go celebrate two in a row. What happened is the game ended as it should have: They lost a game they could have won because of a bad call. That was the margin of error between two great teams.
  13. Craziest finsh ever to a great game. A Super Bowl worthy of the name...unless you're a Seattle fan I guess. Losing like that will be hard to forget.
  14. Tatertester the big girls are always going to be more vulnerable during the spawn. If I know the staging areas where they move up to feed before spawning and hammer them there, is that "unsavory"? If I pound spawning flats in water too stained to sight fish have I violated your code? Maybe fishing at all in the spring is simply too distasteful? We all know that mortality rates go way up during hot weather. Maybe fishing in the heat of summer is unpalatable? My point is, if it is legal and doesn't hurt the fishery it's all good.
  15. We need one to eliminate the silliness that always seems to be the "entertainment" at half-time during the game. Interesting game tonight so far. Why do we need the rest of this nonsense?
  16. I agree that stiper or striper hybrids will test your skill and equipment. Big catfish in moving water are a lot of fun. Salmon on a Great Lake tributary are also a great time. A big salmon headed downstream is a serious challenge. Your lowly carp is pound-for-pound as strong a fighter as I have found in freshwater. Even big bluegill on ultralight gear will get your heart rate up. It's all good!
  17. High-end rods (or reels) are not worth it to me based on my budget. The're certainly lighter and more sensitive than rods at the lower end of the market. I agree with most that there is a point where diminishing returns outweigh the cost of increased performance. The gear I use is good enough. If I had more money I would use better rods for contact baits. I doubt it would make me much, if any better, but I do appreciate the differences.
  18. Congratulations. Grandkids are a wonderful blessing. Enjoy!
  19. Laying on his back? That seems a little odd to me. Of course he is a Patriots fan...
  20. Augustus McCrae, Lonesome Dove.
  21. Catt your data may be correct, although there are many other studies showing much higher mortality rates. What is absolutely unquestionable is that some fish will die as a result of sport fishing. Those of us who fish a lot and catch a disproportionate number of bass compared to average fishermen, have accept that no matter how careful we are returning fish to the water unharmed, some fish will die as a result of our actions. It is not a rare anomaly; it is a predictable and unavoidable part of fishing. I do believe that catch and release, done properly, is vital to maintaining healthy fishing systems. I am not convinced that sight fishing for spawning females has any more consequences than other accepted practices.
  22. It is difficult to understand how you can engage in fishing at all if hauling fish around in a live well troubles you so. Fishing is a blood sport. We do it for our pleasure, knowing that some fish will die in the process. When I compare your argument to Lund Explorer's the evidence does not support your claim of superior wit. This topic will always stir emotion. No need to be nasty about it.
  23. If the moderators pinned every "definitive" thread we would have to go to page three for new posts! Senko lover a couple of years from now your new definitive list will be much different from this one. While there are some of us still using the same gear and techniques from the seventies, for most it is an evolving process. A big part of the fun of fishing is experimenting with new gear and methods in my opinion. Another big part is discussing all that here. I like your enthusiasm. Keep up the good work!
  24. There are a high percentage of posts I do not read, and many of those I do read I do not comment on. This philosophy could be stated as: Enjoy what you like and ignore the rest. I don't always follow this, but think it is a sound policy.
