  1. Have purchased a few used reels. I use them. When I send some reels out for cleaning and/or tuning, I will often send some of the used reels along with the others.
  2. A gimmick for anyone used to baitcast reels, but I'd imagine a help to those just starting out. One less thing to figure out.
  3. Working full time. Two weeks ago Saturday (yesterday) I fell getting back up on the boat ramp from the bank. Twisted the everlovin' out of my left ankle. One thing I haven't been doing is getting back down to the boat ramp to try out any more of the 6 new and new-2-me rods I bought over the winter. Ankle still tender. Balance has gotten horrible if I am not on a flat surface. Read here and a couple other fishing forums. Trying to figure out what reels to put on those new rods. Actually would like to review all my rods and reels to see if I want to make some changes. Anyone near me want to come over and brainstorm? Weighed a few rods and lures. Knew spinnerbaits weighed more than their listing, but was surprised by how much over some are. A half oz. War Eagle weighed .82 oz. Making a trip to the grocery store almost every day because my wife isn't driving right now....and maybe never again. Discovered in January that she has Alzheimer's. Seeing doctors (for me, not wife). MRI, Echo Stress test, Cardiologist, Vascular Surgeon, Orthopedic Surgeon, family doctor, physical therapy. No wonder my honey-dos aren't getting done.
  4. A word of warning. I was a spinning reel user. When I got back into fishing in '09 I decided to try a baitcast reel. Huge mistake on my part. Let's just say it is a good thing my wife has no idea how much I have spent on my baitcast rods and reels. She does realize I have way too many.
  5. Budget helps. Knowing what techniques you want to use the rod for, weights normally used, cover, etc. all would help people to give you better options. As Jig Man said, a MHF makes for a decent all around rod. Plenty of threads relating to 'best rod' at various price ranges. Cheapest: Lightning (or Lightning Shock) or Aird X. Once you get to $100 and above there are lots of choices. Which is why knowing your budget and more about how, where and what you fish is a big help in making an educated recommendation.
  6. Casting: Shimano Conquest 843C (or 844C) MBR and Shimano Antares A or Steez SVF AGS 7' Med HvyHvy and Steez SV TWS Although there is certainly nothing wrong with a cheaper Megabass Destroyer with either of those reels. Spinning: same lines of rods with a Daiwa Exist G LT or Shimano Stella FJ or opt for the cheaper priced Daiwa Certate LT or Shimano Twin Power FD. Sorry OP. Couldn't help myself.
  7. You would have to find a Fury or Mojo Bass on sale to make the $100 cut-off. Now if that "best $100 rod" means any 3-digit whole number starting with 1, then there are plenty more rods that can be added to your list of options. But at $100 I like my HMGs. Other options...ones I have not tried...are the Lancer Pro and Tatula XT (7'4" and longer run $120) and Lew's TP-1. The Ark Viper is a $100 on sale for $60 at TW. I have an Ark Sniper and 2 Tharp rods, but they have seen very limited use. Like them so far. I have a few of the original Tatulas (paid $100 or less new), and feel they are a great value. You probably won't find any regular Tatulas at $100 (new) anymore. I have an original Omen Black. It is a nice rod EXCEPT you should really cast 2-handed with it. One-handed feels like you are going to cast the rod with the lure (and is why the seller gave me a great deal on the rod). Hopefully the Omen 2 rods rectified that. No where near $100, but the Aird X gets good reviews. Irod seldom gets mentioned. The Fiber is a $100 rod. Sportsman's Guide has the Shimano SLX for $100. The Carbonlite 2 is currently on sale for $95. Lots of people here have praised the Carbonlite 2. Check out the Fenwick Eagle ($70). You can find some nice deals if you don't mind used. I picked up a couple Genesis II rods for less than $100 shipped. Nice looking rods. Only out once with them so far, but liked them enough to pick up a third at the same price. I have zero experience with KastKing, but have read a few reviews praising them at their price.
  8. If spool tension is set where you want it to be and casting causes no problem, then simply have part of your thumb on the spool when disengaging.
  9. Revo Toro Beast 4.9:1, Abu Garcia Maxtoro 5.3:1, Revo Beast 5.8:1, Revo X 5.4:1, KastKing Kapstan 5.4:1 are a few I saw looking through TW's website.
  10. Yeah. I was dragging a spinnerbait across the tops of weed beds. Definitely tired this old wrist out. Was worth it as it wound up being one of my best days for numbers.
  11. Also be aware that 'tip heavy' isn't necessarily tied to rod weight. Dobyns rods are known for their balance, yet they aren't always the lightest. A balanced...heavier rod...can be easier to fish all day than a tip heavy lighter rod.
  12. I'm a stingy bugger also. I usually lose 3-4 inches with a Uni Knot. First time seeing this knot. Looks good. Will have to give it a shot. Thanks
  13. Uni, or if worried, the Fish N Fool which (as already stated) is the Uni with the line going through the eye twice.
  14. Fins, 832. Want to try Smackdown.
  15. I've been fishing for more than a few weeks. Still haven't learned how to avoid those nasty trees 100% of the time. I have three Lew's casting reels. Nice reels. Only one Lew's rod. A Custom Pro 7'6" MF Ledge/Crankbait. Looks rather plain, but well put together. Like the feel of the handle. It feels light for its length and balance isn't bad at all with a Sol. As yet it hasn't been fished. Guarantee it will take a lot of outings to catch as many fish as you did in one day. Sucks to live in this area.
  16. Congratulations. Both on the new combo and the good fishing. I should be so lucky. What models came on the combo?
  17. You really should start a separate thread. That way people with knowledge on such reels will be able to help you much easier. I only know of older Daiwas.
  18. A man after my own heart. OP. A lot is personal preference. What you have will work fine. I picked up a nice Scorpion 4 x 4 SVS from a guy who was switching over to 7-7+ reels. 6.2:1 Works fine for me. At 22 IPT I use it for crankbaits. I will admit that I have come to like faster ratios, but will not be getting rid of any slower reels...such as my 5.8:1 reels.
  19. Bought a MHF rated 3/16-3/8 oz. Emailed company as that was more in line with a ML in my eyes. Owner said the rod would cast on both sides of those weights and was a true MH. Had no problem casting a .58 oz. spinnerbait in my local river. (So pulling against a slight current.) Same for lures. Weighed a 1/2 oz. Strike King spinnerbait. My scale said .82 oz. The only truthful person around here is me and you. Sometimes I doubt you.
  20. You didn't mention if you want spinning or baitcast. The vast majority on here will suggest casting unless you specify spinning. And that doesn't hold true 100% of the time. EDIT: I did the same thing. Kept going back to the original post looking for reel type. Didn't notice you mentioned it in a later post. MN Fisher gave some good advice. I've not used Yo-Zuri Hybrid, but personally I'd go with Sufix Elite and forget the line conditioner. Or Trilene XL. My understanding is the Ugly Stick is the number one selling saltwater rod. However, not many that frequent bass forums use one once they get deeper into bass fishing. I would have loved an Ugly Stick in my youth, but couldn't afford one. If you really want another rod and reel (and who doesn't ), then take a look at a Daiwa Aird X 7'MF rated 1/4-3/4 oz. ($54.99 at TW) and one of Daiwa's spinning reels that run from $50-$80 or a favorite of mine...the Daiwa BG at $110. Spend the rest on lures. There are several nice options if you want to spend $100 on the rod. I like my Fenwick HMGs. Okuma EVX gets good reviews. I am not a fan of mini guides on spinning rods, but TW has the Okuma Helios on sale...a $180 rod for $100. Love my Helios mini guide casting rod. Very light.
  21. There is a used iRod Genisis II 7' MHF (a $150 rod) in very good condition for $90 shipped on another site. It is the 703C All Purpose model. Weight 4.02 oz. So fairly light. I picked up one recently, but haven't used it yet. Nice looking rod.
  22. Don't know about the new ones, but take a look at the Berkley Lightning...not the Shock. Still occasionally use the one I've had for over 40 years. Lot of cheaper rods have softer tips. Check out the Aird X. It gets excellent reviews. H2O Ethos is another possibility. At $100 I like my Fenwick HMGs. The Fenwick Eagle rods at $70 also get good reviews. I'm sure others can add to these options. Good luck and to the forum.
  23. And I thought I was bad when I bought about 6 new reels over 2018/2019 winter. You are my new hero. Here you go. Just trying to help out a friend. https://www.ebay.com/p/8027505347?iid=264378667750&chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=264378667750&targetid=882887725827&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9003510&poi=&campaignid=6469750705&mkgroupid=89041169916&rlsatarget=pla-882887725827&abcId=1141176&merchantid=6296724&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzrnC1tSw6AIV4oNaBR04fgVvEAQYAyABEgI7TPD_BwE
  24. Went with Open Office on an old desktop computer. Went with Libre when I got my new laptop a couple years ago. Would have preferred a Linux based laptop, but not knowledgeable enough to go that route. Leave Windows open a week and you can hardly run the computer...even with protective software. Replaced Windows 95 with Linux (on one of my 2 old desktops). Left computer on for months with no problems. OP. Apologize for getting off topic.
  25. Thanks. I happen to have Libre Office and was able to open the file. I hadn't notice that little down arrow on the right side the first time I clicked on the link. OP. I am not the best guy to make recommendations. Especially since I've never used any of those rods or reels.
