  1. I knew there was something about those guys I liked!
  2. Welcome aboard!
  3. Congrats!! Well done!
  4. 55lb is awesome with a canoe. I had one on my 16' Grumman aluminum canoe. I've got a 30 on my kayak, but would like to upgrade to a 45 with infinite speed adjustment rather than 5 forward and 3 reverse speeds.
  5. I could flip the table and ask why use 30# and up? Of course there are reasons, and techniques like flipping in thick cover, etc. But like @NHBull, those aren't things I do much, if any of. I've never seen the need for 60-80# line, but plenty use 'em. In the end we use what we feel comfortable/confident with. 10 and 15# braid are my staples on spinning gear, and 20 is on my casting gear (and always with a leader) For one, line management is better on spinning, for which I use 1000 size reels. I can fit more on them than if I used 30. And yes, I've used 30 and 40# braid in years past, just prefer thinner lines.... As for 20 on casting, yes, it is light, and there can be issues with dig-in, but in my use, I'm keenly aware of that fact and always take off line if I've fought a big bass, or pulled in a log. I'm truly amazed at how strong 10, 15, and 20# braid is. Stronger than we think, I'd wager.
  6. Folks, I don't write the news... Oh the dangers of too much alcohol...to your lure! http://www.insideedition.com/headlines/25031-bikini-clad-drunk-woman-bites-mans-fishing-line-gets-arrested-authorities "A Florida woman has been arrested on public drunkenness charges after she bit a man’s fishing line and swam off with his lure, authorities said." Moral of the story, use steel leader material!
  7. Welcome aboard!
  8. Welcome aboard! Grubs work fine. I personally haven't used them in a while. I prefer Ned rigs, wacky, and drop shotting. Those tend to be my bread-and-butter setups.
  9. Welcome aboard!
  10. Hi Steve, welcome aboard!
  11. Welcome aboard! For reels, I'd opt for Diawa, or Shimano (my pref). Just have had very good experiences with those two. You can also look at the Pflueger President as it is a solid reel for the price and has quite a following. As for rods, there are so many in the $ range you are looking at. My best advice is to go to a local sporting goods store like Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc., and ask to put the reel of choice on different rods to get a feel for the balance. You might like a tip heavy setup, or equal balance, or tip light. I'm in the latter category. Point is, get your hands on combos (if you can) and make your decision. If it were me, I'd likely opt for a Shimano reel and a shorter rod. That's how I roll. Longer rods are not my thing. To each his/her own As for braid - I use 10# and 15# along with a leader sized anywhere from 4 to 15# test, either copoly or fluorocarbon. Braid makes life a lot easier to manage on a spinning setup.
  12. Welcome aboard, Tom!
  13. Never fished in TN, but welcome to Bass Resource!
  14. Welcome aboard! So sorry you caught a bass instead of a bluegill! Now you're hopelessly hooked to bass fishing... Bluegill are seriously fun, though!
  15. Welcome aboard!
  16. Welcome aboard, Bobby!
  17. This is one of the worst times of year for us. 1) Dreaded dew points & humidity making an otherwise lovely 83º feel like 100º. 2) Hurricanes, Tropical Storms/Depressions
  18. Welcome aboard, @Big Moe! I go between fluorocarbon leader and copoly leader like Yo Zuri Hybrid. Both work great for everything I throw - which is mainly soft plastics, jigs, etc. @roadwarrior is right with 6-8# test. I also use 10 and 15 for some presentations, but I find myself mostly using 6 and 8. Plenty strong, just make sure you set your drag properly (not too tight or locked down) otherwise you may end up with a snapped leader on a nice fish. I speak from experience
