Swim Jigs: I like 1/4-3/8oz, although I fish a 1/4oz about 85% of the time. I like a bullet shaped head, 7-10 strand weedguard, regular wire hook (not heavy), hand tied skirt with the inner skirt trimmed out. All of these are very important for profile, action, and ease of hooksets. Swim jigs are NOT flipping jigs, but more like a spinnerbait. Colors in the northeast are usually bluegill patterns. My favorite is watermelon and electic purple. Single tail grubs are my favorite trailer. I will use a black and blue in dirty water, or even a bright white shad pattern. Matching grub trailers.
Football head: 3/8oz for shallower water, up to 1oz for 20+ ft. Double tail grubs, or rage craws/Chigger craws. Regular wire hook for easy hooksets with a lot of line out. Always throw craw patterns, because that's what I'm trying to represent.
Stand up heads: I don't use these very often. I like a flat sided head design for easy skipping. My favorite is a D&L Advantage. I like a HEAVY hook, like a tuna gaff. ITs a close-quarters combat bait. 3/8-1/2oz, heavier cover gets a heavier head. In cold water, I'll use a regular chunk for little action, and rage craws/double tail grubs, anything really as the water warms. Most toss craw patterns, sometimes a bluegill pattern if I see a lot of panfish around. Dirty water, I'll toss a color like D&L's Moon Cricket with matching trailer.
Good luck!
