  1. Oh! In that case I'm gonna go find a used GoPro and a selfie stick...
  2. DSG has them as well. Like someone mentioned, not much different than a lot of other things out there, I'm sure they work fine. Am I allowed to use them even if I don't have a social media presence?...
  3. In clear water, Something that mimics a baitfish, or crawfish. In murky water, chart/wht or blk/bl.
  4. Oh good, I see a lot of folks paying way too much interest on small discretionary items. Is that one of those bicycle kayaks?
  5. I have a couple of buddies that are into free diving fishing competitions. Not my thing, but I can certainly see the appeal. We used to go down to the keys every winter for a couple of weeks every year, dove it a lot. What I really liked was how lobsters backed out of pots and into my bag, who teaches them that... Horn of Africa has some really good diving, who knew.
  6. Did good with size early in the season, then it was more number than size for me this year. Didn't fish as much as I usually do due to schedule. Biggest was just under 8, 2 right a 6, and a few around 5. No studs this year. I did catch my 2 PB crappies on back to back casts though while bass fishing.
  7. MWR (Morale Welfare and Recreation) is geared towards providing military folks with value, they don't have a profit motive, their prices are set to cover maintenance, replacement, and other operating expenses. Most bases and installations have one, and while some have some silly rules, offer a great service. You can rent anything from boats/canoes/kayaks, camping equipment, mountain bikes, bouncy castles and dunk tanks (always raised a lot of $ when I sat in one, must be my pleasant demeanor ), as well as locally specific equipment.
  8. Dove in the Caribbean side of Colombia once, where the vis was like being on land on a clear crisp day. It was a bit unnerving without having that normal bubble of vis for reference. Absolutely gin clear that put quarries to shame, and the fact that the h2o temp was in the 80s didn't hurt.
  9. It is not surprising that someone your grandpa's age has that view of money and spending. Going through a decade or so of severe economic chaos and uncertainty will do that. It really is a matter of priorities. "What you can afford" doesn't mean can you swing the payments. There is much more than that, particularly with a boat, where the cost of ownership can be significant. We have a saying in the salt, BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand, and "It's a hole where you throw money". I am not suggesting you not buy a boat, just that you do your due diligence in what's involved. And not to get all Charles Schwabb on you, but every dollar you save or spend affects your financial standing, now and in the future. There are all sorts of formulas for income v discretionary spending, some good some not, but ultimately you know you, your family and your situation best. My suggestion is do the math and work out a budget, and see if it makes sense. Also, There is nothing that says you have to try to keep up with the Joneses, there are several good boats that won't break the bank, and are more affordable to run, remember, the boat you have is always better than the boat you don't have (unless you are going to invite me fishing, then get ALL the options and the 300HP ). Finally, as a general financial rule of thumb, If you can save 20% of your take home and not touch it, and provide for the mundane day to day stuff, and have a rainy day fund, buy whatever makes you happy.
  10. I don't get it. What's funny about clear water?
  11. Giant tin of caramel popcorn....
  12. You are being over 40 again... The statement is the water "can" become so clear, not "becomes so clear", and there is no language linking the picture to the statement. I guess this sort of vagueness and deception is classified as click bait these days, pass the Geritol®...
  13. From Md - lower NY we get to fish year round. Except for maybe a couple of weeks in January and February when the water gets hard. Every year is different of course, but lately, it's been easier to winter fish. Pike, pickerel and catfish are quite active as well during the colder months. On really cold winters, we'll head south for a couple of weeks when we get a chance. I would love to be closer to, and fish places like Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario or Upstate NY, but the shorter seasons and cold winters are a bit much.
  14. I run 40-60 lb mono. Spinnerbaits, spinners and large JBs and other long lures tend to end up far away enough from the teeth to be ok. Shorter stubbier lures are the ones that usually end up in trouble.
  15. Update: So I found 4 pairs of my rods that are labeled and visually the same, the difference in weight were 1 gm, 4 gm, 6 gm, and 7 gm. These are middle of the road $80-$200 rods. 2 pairs are new, and the other 2 used, so one handle might have a tenth or two gms more dirt...
  16. That's going to be fun, (while it lasts) If it's mostly bass, a St Croix, or Daiwa stick would be my choice, if it's a salt stick that will see a bit of bass, the Shimano Teramar is a lot of rod for the $.
  17. I have no stored data. Most measurements were made for selection and sorting. Offer still stands. There are several ways components can vary in weight (and other parameters) but I'm making no assertions as to if components contribute to the variances. I sometimes have an hour or two to kill at a mall with a BPS when waiting for the wife. I'll see if I can get some actual weights from some rods.
  18. I hope they start selling tackle in Staples®, specially frogs and poppers... Now I know how Dennis Miller feels....
  19. You are speaking of custom rods, tom stated production rods. My offer still stands. I haven't kept count of how many rods/blanks I have weighed, but it's probably several hundred. And just to be clear, I'm not saying some models from some manufacturer's may or may not be within any particular tolerance, just that "A production fishing rod isn't going to vary more then 3 grams..." is an inaccurate statement, both in practice and logically. And since one can do dollars to donuts, we can do $ to custom sticks if you'd like (If you can get them to within one gram)
  20. I have lots of $$$ to put down against anyone who thinks this is true.
  21. Pad crasher. Buy 6. On sale and or with a discount coupon/code, and they'll be like $4 each.
  22. when at 40, I heard "60 is the new 40" I thought that might be a a load of crap, now 3 years from 60, I'm convinced of it. Everyone's body will react to aging and a lifetime of use and abuse differently, but all of us will have to adapt to our increasing physical limitations as time goes on, time and tide, you know...
