  3. I really do like starting a new reports thread, mostly because it means that I actually went fishing. Since that's not happening anytime soon, I figured I'd throw one up just to stay in practice. Don't really remember if any of these were actually on a Thursday or not but here's a green one & a brown one and just for the heck of it, a striped one. And for those poor souls in the same boat, please feel free to pile on here - hopefully it will ease the pain a little. A-Jay

  4. Heres me on a night fishing trip around 1978 . I would be about nineteen years old in my new Skeeter 15 foot tri hull SS1 Fisherman . I fished whenever I could. The lure here is probably a black grape jelly worm. the reel is an Abu 4600c. The rod could be a fiberglass Lews speed stick . Good memories.

  7. I'll just come out and say it...there over rated. There are plenty of baits that you can get easily that are better in my opinion. And yes I have several of the freestyles.

  8. Having lost our daughter this year and myself having acute pancreatitis (should of have been flower food) this last year has changed many things. I too was hell bent on getting to the lake and getting it DONE. I still have the hunger ... I just approach it more slowly ... like eating a good meal ... you savor every bite. I get up early now and take my time enjoying a couple cups of tea (doc says no coffee yet) and some breakfast. Make a lunch and head out to get loaded to the boat. Five or ten minutes don't mean that much anymore. The gift of being on the water is truly a gift...as is time with family. Tight Lines

  10. I had a stray thought about this. If it truly mattered what pro was using what gear, and we all wanted to fish with the stuff the absolute best guys were using, most of us would be fishing with Quantum rods and reels. I'm fairly certain most of us are not fishing with Quantum gear. That suggests to me that it doesn't matter a bit who is using what.

  11. I've fished an A rig quite a bit, caught a bunch of fish on it, never caught a double. I've had bunches of doubles on about every kind of hardbait though, is that unfair? You still have to find the fish and make them bite, it isn't like it turns them into mindless zombies that must eat because it got within their strike zone. I've had days where I threw it and threw for hours with no luck, but the guys that found the fish smashed them with it. When it's on, it's crazy good, but that can be said for a lot of presentations. It also has very specific windows when it works. I don't really care either way about tournaments banning them, but I don't see how it could be unfair if everyone was allowed to use one?

  12. Beautiful fish! Is that a hybrid striper or is that from saltwater? And here's my PB from last year:

  13. Nice fish! I'll play along too since we're dodging snowstorms (flurries for you midwest guys) here in MD. Not the biggest all year, but a great day on my favorite lake. From day 1 of our club classic on Gaston of which I placed 2nd. Largemouth and a nice sized Spot that rounded out a decent limit that day.

  18. Back then that would be dinner. I would guess that to be 200-300 lbs. We used to catch them quite frequently off Marco Island & 10,000 islands area in the gulf when I was younger. We did catch one in the 100-150lb range.

  20. So...didn't think I was going to get out yesterday, but by noon I was done with work and went anyway. Clinton is ice-free and wide open, but it was way too rough, so I continued south to Lone Star (which is also wide open as well). Roughest I've ever seen the main lake at LS. Got out and was checked by a CO before I even started the motor. First time since 2013 actually, lol. Ran across the lake to the southeast arm, and to my surprise ol' Mr. Kehde was pulling out. Good to see him out there. Which by the way, Clayton, when he talks about fishing a "shallow mud flat" in his blog at LS, he's definitely talking about that cove, not the homes cove. It was way too shallow for me so I bailed and fished the windblown steep bank to the right of the dam. Stayed out in about 18 feet of water getting my jerk on. Pro Blue KVD was the ticket. Had a window between 3:15-3:45 and boated 6 Lone Star Specials off the same bank in a few passes. Nothing to brag about, but it was fun raising fish deep on a jerkbait in 38 degree water. They were shorts but they are definitely eating, fat little turds. Couldn't pass up the day and glad I got out.

  21. I'm happy they don't advertise. All the good stuff would be gone the first day. Honestly I think they're better off the way it is, they get loyal customers like me. ...who will come in any chance I get just to see if I will catch a sale- and then end up buying SOMETHING for my trouble. Its good marketing. .....I don't remember the last time walked out of there empty handed.

  24. You can fill out your bag in 5 casts with any bait if you are on a big enough school of fish. Like everyone has said, you still have to know how and where to fish it. These past couple of months on Pickwick it is literally almost the ONLY thing you could catch fish on. I have seen two 30 lb. bags be weighed in and me and my partner have been on a consistent 20-24 lb. bag for the past two months. Every single fish on the a-rig, and you can bet every single good bag being weighed in at the tournaments on Pickwick have came off the a-rig. It just produces big fish this time of the year. I caught my PB 10 lb 1 oz. LM on the a-rig about a month ago. If everyone can use an a-rig then I see no problem with it. I also have no problem with them being banned from tournaments. The only problem I have with the a-rig is when the extra hooks hook into the side of the fish. And btw I have doubled up one time ever on the a-rig. It doesn't happen all the time like you seem to think.

  26. The first one had a 19.5 inch girth, 22.5 inches long. Weighed in at 8 lbs 1 oz. The second one was a full pound bigger at 9 lbs 1 oz. It also had a 19.5 inch girth but was a full inch longer at 23.5 inches. Both caught off of the same sunken tree way way off shore on the same lure two days apart.

  31. Marie, a nice, calm and respectable Cajun lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist whose name is Boudreaux, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like ta buy some cyanide." Then Boudreaux asked, "Mees, Why in de world do ya need cyanide?" Marie replied, "Ah need it to poison my husband." Boudreaux eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! A..h can't give you cyanide to kill you husband, dat's against de law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw boat of us in jail! All kinds of bad tings will happen. You CANNOT have any cyanide!" Marie reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband Thibodeaux in bed with the pharmacist's wife. Boudreaux looked at the picture and replied, "You didn't told me you had a prescription."

  32. Losing fish is a separate issue, mitigated with proper gear and settings. The main claim is that you miss bites with braid. As far as losing fish goes, I have a saying. The longer it takes for the fish to get in the net, the more that can go wrong.

  33. My biggest weakness is not realizing in a timely manner that what I am doing is not working. When the bite is/gets tough I just hunker down & continue doing what I'm doing. I need to adjust on the fly when depth/location or technique is wrong for that day. Tenacity is a good trait but serves you best when you allow it to help solve the puzzle at hand.

  34. you forgot 5" senko for largemouth, smallies, walleye and pickerel you forgot a pencil popper for stripers/bluefish (unless you aren't talking about saltwater) a spoon would be a great choice that would catch everything.

  36. 28" at my house. Regular Nor'Easter. I guess the blizzard classification is due to the sustained winds. No biggie either way. I'm just waiting now for the trail groomers to do their thing. Too deep to break the trail.

  37. This storm was a larger version of a situation we encounter much of the time here. When we have lake effect snow warnings here, they generally cover several counties. We all know not everyone in those counties will get the predicted snow totals, BUT we also know some places will. Forecasters know the potential is there, just can't pinpoint exactly where due to a little wind shift here and there. So I think they throw out the warnings in a little broader area to compensate for those shifts, especially if a major metro area could be involved. I personally feel weather forecasting has been good the past few years. Most of the time they are spot on, but sometimes they do blow it as well.

  39. It's not rocket science and don't let anyone lead you to believe it is either. You don't need special oils and greases. Everything you need can be had at walmart. There will be a little start up cost but you'll have enough for a long time. The only thing you can't get there would be drag grease. Some reels run a wet drag and need a very thin film of grease on the drag washers. Regular grease can't be used in place of it. Has to be drag specific. I use Cal's drag grease. You can also use it on the gears if you wanted to. Marine grease - gears 140wt gear oil - sliding parts - worm gear - non spool bearings. Remington oil - spool bearings Purple power - cleaning parts - soaking bearings Denatured alcohol - drop bearings in it after cleaning to remove any moisture.

  41. Wow, you guys are rough! Haha. If he's telling the truth; that means he's accomplished more than any of us! This topic, though old, is not outdated. Though they didn't get into a fistfight, it's not unlike the Poche/Monroe incident. It's about professionalism, and right from wrong. He's just stating his opinion. Though I find it tough to have an opinion on anything without being there first hand.

  43. It sounds to me like you have never actually fished The Rig. All the fish I have caught were on the middle arm, never on the outside and I have never caught multiple fish. The only tournaments I fish are for charities so I really don't care if they are banned or not. However, if you are a recreational fisherman you are cheating yourself by not using the Alabama Rig.

  45. So glad the weather guys were more wrong than right about this one. Of course, Boston and New England got hit hard which is not good but the rest of the country was spared. Just remember, there was more snow in Siberia last year below the 60th parallel than unusual which means bad winters for the eastern US. And do we have another one heading our way next week???

  48. VMC for single hooks. I really like the "bang for the buck" aspect of there "Ike approved" lineup. I switched to these from Gamakatsu, and on top of saving a few $'s I have not had any issues with them. I also really like the spin and power shot dropshot hooks. Mustad KVD Elite 2x short, 1x strong for trebles. I replace every stock hook on every hard bait with these.
