  1. So with it December in Kansas we don't see lots of big Largemouth. In fact it's almost down to one one of 2 local powerplants if you want to have a decent day at all and then the Wipers are generaly the best thing going. The wiper are nice because 1 they get big & 2 they school and if you catch one you can sometimes catch several more on consecutive casts. Anyhow I'd just got a new rod to go chase Wiper with. I needed something fairly stiff but not crazy expensive because I dont think it will get used most of the year. I ended up with a MH Duckett rod and I put my 100 size Speed spin on and was chucking a 4" swimbait. So long story short, I get bit and bring the fish to the surface next to the boat and see its a Largemouth and a big one! It immediately dives back down and goes under a steel cable. At this point I'm thinking no way will I get that fish in the boat but then it turns around and swims back from under the cable and I was able to quickly get her in the net. I was by myself and wanted to find someone to take my pic but I didn't want to leave the hot water outlet and take a chance killing the fish by releasing it in colder water. I settled for a couple videos weighing it and snapped a couple pics and sent her back on her merry way.

  2. To help put it in perspective, our state record is only 11.88 pounds and was caught several years ago out of a private strip pit. The fish before that was 11.75 pounds and that record stood for almost 40 years! Our bass just don't get very big here. I'm still looking for one over 8 in KS!

  10. I've got a few different pairs of split ring pliers. A micro screw driver still works best for me. Poke the flat blade through, and then twist it to open the ring.

  12. I don't think any one company is going to take the crown for most durable. Most if not all of the major reel companies have produced reels that have proved themselves to stand the test of time and use. You have already had suggestions for many reels that are very good. Pick the one that has the set of features you are interested in and best meets the needs of your fishing and you will have your winner.

  15. First jig fish on my first jig I've ever made. Not a giant but a keeper at 16" none the less. It's a bunch of browns and purples with a hint of black and blue in there. I call it the "Ozark Special" lol.

  18. Then you would have lost because the only thing Curt catches out of LaCygne with jigs is flat heads and the steel cables . That being said, I would gladly catch a one of his flatheads from that lake!

  19. Clayton,it was nice of you to let Curt catch a green fish out of that lake, instead of Flatheads. Lol

  22. According to KVD (from the KVD website), power fishing is "about maximizing your time with the lures and techniques required to catch fish under current conditions." Isn't that what every basser tries to do except when he's feeling too lazy to try? "Power fishing" seems to be a meaningless and subjective term that can cover almost anything but sitting on the bank in a folding chair with a cane pole and a cork, kind of dozing off, and the night crawler has been finessed off your tiny hook by a little bream a half hour ago. Now, that's definitely not power fishing. But maybe what I do is, even when it's from the bank.

  27. And Mike is a great guy and loves to ham it up when you get your pics taken with him. Nicest guy in the world so keep an eye out for him. And Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, Hackney, Ish, G-Man, etc. They will be all over the place and you will find them as nice as the NASCAR drivers.

  29. It is made by a company called Naked Baits, it is not a comerical skirt making tool, but for lower quantities it makes it easy. I use the tool with a typical skirt band and get my skirt the way I want it. I install it, then wire tire just below the skirt band and then cut the skirt band free.

  30. Well, my Grand Dad told me how Minnesota ice fishing first came to be… Seems back in 1879 there was a lumberjack named Sven Oldsen that settled just three stone’s throws northwest of Fergus Falls with his wife Lena and their dog Oly. On a particularly bitter cold morn with the sun just throwing its first rays through the standing pines, Sven was awakened by a roar he could only imagine coming from a full grown bull moose. As Sven sat straight up to find Oly scurrying off the foot of the bed for whatever cover he might find, it came to Sven that the thunderous and now odorous commotion was merely Lena releasing some of the benefits of yesterday’s deer jerky. Day’s early light illuminated the generous stream of drool meandering through Lena’s Scandinavian mud pack facial and got Sven to thinking. He could slap the generous behind lying next to him and hope to convince Lena that a round of close cuddling was in order, OR… he could quietly creep out into the -17 degree northwest wind, trek the ¾ mile path to the Ottertail River Dam and chisel a hole through the 27 inch thick ice cover to drop a fishing line and hope to snag a couple more of those 7 inch perch he’d been snagging a few months earlier. That particular morn Sven’s decision took less time than would most of you still reading this story and the rest is, as they say in Minnesota, uff-da. oe

  31. Sure looks like a fallfish to me. It's a type of chub, and the bane of many a flyfisherman who are after trout. :-) Tight lines, Bob

  38. Hey Senko lover, Hopefully you will be able to get down here. I have been sitting on my back porch on the lake and see pro anglers. its awesome seeing them practice! I am hoping to see Mike Iaconelli on the lake. I will certainly not bother them but my familys fishing/boating store is at the ramp so hopefully he will stop in. Would be nice to meet him.

  39. Do Yankees even know what a feist is? Or the regard that southerners have for those lil' mongrels? A feist is more raider than the Masstiff. I mean they're bug eyed, think they're ten foot tall and bullet proof, spend allot of time barking up the wrong tree, specialize in chasing bushy tail, shake when they bark, and hard to house train. Sounds more and more like raider the more I think about it

  41. I used to think the berkley eggs were ridiculous, then I tried them, if you can get a natural drift I'm convinced that most trout will eat it. With the trout magnets you just twitch/jig them, drives the fish nuts, the jighead is shaped like a shad dart so they go all over the place instead of just up and down like normal jigheads. 4lb test max for trout magnets, 2 is better though.

  42. The braid of my choice is Power Pro. Reason being: its really affordable, especially in Walmart. It casts very well and it's easy to manage. I am sure the other braids mentioned are probably really good, but with PP so readily accessible to me and i have such a good track record using it, i really don't see the need to change brands.

  43. If you rip the arse out of your knickers, Kanzen is better for stitching up emergency repairs. Power Pro, on the other hand is better for sewing on buttons. Neither is worth a sick monkey's flop for fishing.

  45. A man goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives him the drink he says: 'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 88th birthday and it's today.' The bartender says 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.' As the man finishes his drink the person to his right says'I would like to buy you a drink, too.' The old man says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming up' says the bartender.' As he finishes that drink, the person to his left says 'I would like to buy you one, too.' The old man says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming right up' the bartender says. As he gives him the drink, he says, Sir, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?' The old man replies, ’Sonny, when you're my age, you've learned how to hold your liquor... Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.'
