  1. I think that as bass fishing diversified, got more exposure, there was a desire to label or brand techniques. Finesse, Power, whatever you want to call it has been around a long time. You can finesse a 1 oz. jig. You can power fish a grub. I will say this, I always think of "finesse" as describing the gear used to hook and land bass. Conversely, when I think power fishing, I think of the way you fish the bait.

  3. I dedicate a lot of my cold weather fishing to these hard fighters, as do several other KC area guys, so instead of starting a new post every time I'll just post in here. I've been on them good this last week in the two short trips I've been able to make. Yesterday I shared the boat with Cbass12 and we were able to find them right where I left them last week. He's never eaten them and wanted to try them so we brought home 2 limits of wipers and 4 fat white bass that smacked our spoons the 2 hours we were on the water. My biggest two, the biggest was 5lbs 13ozs and around 24" long. Our cleaning station is 2 2X12s screwed to a piece of plywood for a little size reference. Thinking I might have to chase them around again this morning, then gardnerjigman is going to chase them with me Thursday morning when I get off work before. Hopefully they'll keep playing right until ice up and I have to switch to just the power plant lakes. I like to share the wealth and did so by sharing the details with other KC area guys and Chris S was able to put the intell into action last weekend with a toad of his own

  5. Man I'm sure these fish are going to disappoint me at some point but they've been in the same place and eating for over a week now. Decided to keep some for Cbass and another guy at work. Biggest was 5lbs 13ozs and in the 24" range. Got a few fat white bass that got tossed into the mix too. Coty is coming off the DL Thursday to hopefully get in on some of this action with me. Our fillet table here is 2 2X12s screwed to a sheet of plywood for a size reference.

  7. Recently the wife and I came into a modest sum of money, so decided to remodel our bathrooms. Our kids are grown and gone, so we each have our own baths. They abut each other and we have noticed some cracking in the walls and floor tiles in that area. I should say here that our home is over fifty years old, and is built on a concrete slab. Prior to commencing our remodel, I decided to call in a Structural Engineer. $300 later I was informed that we have significant subsidence in a 10’x20’ area directly beneath the bathrooms. So, I called in a foundation repair guy. It cost me $150 to find out that the guy wouldn’t touch the job until it was determined that the foundation didn’t have a water leak. So, I called in a leak detection specialist. Another $300 to find out that yes, indeed, I have a water leak, and it’s located directly underneath the wall between our two baths. Which bath to destroy? I chose mine. The plumbers had to rip out the built-in vanity and all of the ceramic flooring prior to digging a hole large enough for a small sauna.. They found the leak, repaired it, back-filled with concrete, and handed me a bill for $2,700. That problem repaired, I recalled the foundation guy. This time he didn’t charge me, but said the repair would cost me $1,650. We will now be out over $5,000, and we haven’t even come close to starting the remodel. My bath is in shambles, no sink or vanity, just a big patch of concrete, a bunch of broken tiles, a toilet, and a still-intact shower. Our modest sum of money has now turned into a paltry sum of money. I’m beginning to wonder if Wal-Mart needs a Greeter.

  8. Seems that all shipping companies can be pretty careless at times.... That was me that tore part of the sticker off, but the hole was there when I got my package. Luckily I had everything in the box. On the other hand, I already rigged up some jigs that look good enough to eat myself. Can't wait until next spring. If anyone's wondering, left to right is Skip N Jig Watermelon Red w/ Falcon Rage Chunk Skip N Jig Black & Blue w/ Xcite baits Raptor Chunk Midnight Flash Greenfish Tackle Crawball Brown Craw w/ Watermelon Red Flake Rage Craw Pepper Custom Casting Jig PBJ w/ Netbait Paca Chunk PBJ DJ California Swim Jig Crappie w/ Skinny Dipper White trash (the hook on this thing is monstrous!!)

  10. If it's curly then that means you overheated the line and that's why that happened. Cut and start over. Use more saliva and cinch it down slower.

  12. All you need is a piece of 1/4" hardware cloth about 36" long X 24" wide. Make a tube shape about 8" dia X 36", wire the seam together fold one end into a funnel shape with 2" opening, flatten the opposite end and fold back. This is your basic trap. Tie a cord about 10' long to the funnel end. Tie fish heads or bacon inside the trap located near the middle, toss the trap into the water and stake the cord so you can retrieve the trap. Leave the trap in the water over night and you should have crayfish/crawdads in the morning. Unfold the flat end and shake out the crayfish. Tom

  14. My dream combo has changed a bit since the last time tere was a Thread like this one. Right now, one of the combos that I am using is a Conquest 50/NRX802C. That is a dream combo in itself but I am very tempted to buy an Aldebaran MG7 for the NRX802C. I am mainly just curious what it would feel like to fish with a combo that weighs around 9oz. It would also be just a tad over $650.00 and in the world of dream combos, is very reasonable!

  15. I agree on the premier. You could get one at TW for $100 with the Black Friday sale... Really nice rods for the money. I would definitely reccomend them over the veritas and lews rods mentioned.

  16. Oh. But wait a minute.....you wouldn't have a hook for the guts. Okay, here's my answer: a Yum Money Frog (toughest soft plastic frog on the market) with a 2/0 EWG hook. You could catch bluegill with guts on the tip of it, although it would have to be a big bluegill to use the whole hook. I have done it, though.

  17. Good idea. I've caught bluegill on cow spleen. I'm sure snakehead guts would work.

  18. I have mixed feelings on ceramics, I have several reels that have them installed on the spools and they perform well. What I can't swear is that they perform better than a very well cleaned and properly oiled SS bearing. In my use I believe the biggest difference that I can see/notice is when using lighter baits, somewhere around 1/4oz the ceramics seem to cast better and with less effort. When casting anything 3/8oz and up it seems that most any relatively clean and serviceable bearing performs well.

  20. Guys that eat them say they're much better than bass. They have red meat you have to cut out but it's pretty easy to do. If you don't cut that out though, they're pretty fishy tasting.

  22. According to a passage in the wonderful book (which I highly recommend to scientific-minded folks among you bassers), KNOWING BASS, The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish, by Keith A. Jones, PhD (Lyons Press, 2002): Dr. Don McCoy of Univ. Kentucky "found that largemouths ... quickly learned to distinguish between colors falling in the red and green sectors of the spectrum but struggled to differenciate shades of blue. This suggests that bass color vision is relatively good from red to green but weak in the blues and violets. According to McCoy's findings, bass have their highest color discrimination capabilities around two areas: yellow-green (wavelengths measuring 540 nm) and yellow-orange (610nm). In these areas they could distinguish between colors differing as little as 5 nm". Now, this does not tell us what baits to use when, but there are other passages in the book that address lure selection based on science. Clearly water depth, water color, water clarity, and time of day all play a role in color vision. Contrast between bait and surroundings are important, and of course odor, low frequency sounds, and lure vibration and water movement detectable by the lateral line system are all factors that combine to determine if and how a bass bites a bait. And then there are factors that are internal in the bass, like how hungry the guy is. I am glad there are good scientists out there learning more about bass biology and behavior. I have noticed lately a seeming increase in the subtle turqoise blue coloration on the underside of the jaws of LMB that I have cought over the past two weeks, wondering if it has something to do with mating behavior. I guess it is odd since they supposedly don't see blue well. (Where I live in S Florida, spawning season starts soon.) If anyone has noticed this blue color and understands what it might be, please let me know! Happy catching!

  25. Nice looking boat. The advice in this thread will get you where you need to be. Definitely take it for a spin if you're going to spend your money on it. On a side note, it never ceases to amaze me the vagueness of used boat ads. I know for certain that if I were selling a boat that I would list the actual model #'s of the electronics, trolling motors, etc., as well as detailed information about the boat/upgrades/maintenance. I also wish I had a buck for every boat ad that I've read that included a "trolley motor." lol

  32. I'd say probably my 7'2" HXF *** Black. Really impressed with that rod for lots of big presentations. You can throw frogs, big wakebaits, jigs, deep cranks, chatterbaits... It's super light, has a ton of backbone and just enough tip softness to really bomb casts and allow action out of big vibration baits etc. Blown away at what they offer- especially for the price!

  40. This morning I guess they took him off the heavy sedation/induced coma and woke him up. He opened his eyes and was alert and knew what had happened and what was going on. Still optimistic about the left leg, and they were able to, for the time being, save enough of his right leg below the hip socket to at least fasten a prosthetic to if/when the time comes. Still a long ways to go before he's out of the woods, and still a lot of things unknown at this time, but at least the news today was somewhat positive.

  41. I'd have to say pretty much everything is you get what you pay for. This is especially true when buying fluorocarbon fishing line. I've had too many bad experiences with cheap fluoro that retail less than $20/spool.
