  1. Best cheapest doesn't work. Most quality rod manufactures have a good quality product at the high end but offer a low end to compete with others. The low end stuff of good name rod manufactures usually suffers. You can buy better elsewhere. G loomis has always been imx and above for good quality. The lower end stuff was and is overpriced for what you get. St croix is the same. Avid & above is the good stuff. The lines below not so much. The big guys with quality reputations have to compete with others. They offer lower end lines often built off shore to compete with others. People buy the name not knowing where the quality starts. I don't condemn manufactures from doing this as they have to compete to stay in business. But knowing what is the best buy for the dollar spent is important for me. Just my opinion from years of experience.

  2. The newest additions. Been waiting on the 50th and the Ito for some time. The custom painted Fuego has a TDZ 100 spool in it. The Type R is, well , a Type R

  3. That is exactly what I´m talking about, I got both and I swear I see no difference at all, I´m not much of a stickbait fan, I do fish with them but not to the point that I can say: " oh well, there sure is a difference ! ", what I like about Dingers: 1.- is the fact that they last several fish compared to the 1 or 2 I get out of a GYCB/KInami, 2.- they catch fish consistently 3.- more units to a bag Notice that I didn´t mention price, to me that doesn´t count much.

  4. Any 50/51 size Shimano gets my vote. Just choose if you like red, white, or green. Simple to use, versatile, comfortable, and will last.

  5. 1996 for the site. Launched the forums in 1997; then changed forum platforms in 1999; then changed again to this platform in 2010. With the first switch, I started with a clean slate (did not migrate any of the old forums). However when I changed them in 2010, the volume of posts was so huge that the conversion of data to the new platform was estimated to take over a week. So I had to drop several of the early years in order to whittle down the size. I had several profiles in the previous version. I kept this one, which was created in 2004.

  7. That was smart to propose. Now you have someone to feed the dog while you are out fishing... Just kidding, congratulations.

  8. You know, I ***** a lot about the negatives of living in an urban area with 3 million people, an area where being a fisherman is more of an exception than the rule. Than I read about you guys having to shut it down for the next few months while my only concern is if the water temperature has dropped below 65 degrees this week. Big whoop for me, I might have to wear a hoodie in the morning because the air temperature is a brisk 55. I should just shut up, take the negatives of living in Southern California in stride and be thankful that tomorrow when much of the country will be huddled in side, I'll be in shorts & barefoot still catching bass on baits that I don't have to drag around slowly. Thank you for the perspective adjustment...

  9. I use both spinning & casting. My favorite rods are mhm which handle up to 1oz baits. I mostly use 10lb braid with 10-15 lb mono leaders. We mostly drift & cover water.

  11. 15/20# braid, 8# fluoro leader. Here's an article that details one technique for presenting baits with light gear. Not your typical DS in 30+ FOW: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/dropshot-bedding-bass.html

  12. Very good A-Jay! The first Pro Angler to reach $1,000,000 in career earning was Larry Nixon, he is also know for his ability to quickly adjust to changing conditions. Larry's technique of choice is Texas Rigged plastics 80% of the time! Works for me

  21. If you have one rod and you get pleasure from it, more power to you. If I could have one, it would be the champ 734. However, I consider myself pretty common in that I have an average job. I just don't party, smoke, hunt, have kids or a house so I spend my money on my favorite hobby. Therefore I own two of the 734's lol

  31. I actually like ice fishing better than open water fishing and started doing it seriously last winter. I can give you some solid advice and would suggest you go with somebody that has done it before and has the gear and knows what they're doing. You don't need a flasher to catch fish but I wouldn't go without one now. The same for the house and heater. It's easy to get discouraged when you go and don't start catching fish right away and don't know where to go from there. I'm LOVING this arctic blast and hope to be on hard water by Black Friday.

  32. I use a palomar for braid, SD Jam on Fluoro. I don't use mono. I will add that since I fish waters with pike, and many of them, I always fish either a heavy fluoro leader or sometimes titanium leaders.

  33. Love those redfin perch. I recently tied some tiny 1/32oz. hair jigs specifically for yellow perch. Results were pretty good, with a few decent sized ones. This is the largest so far this year. And the hair jig that I caught them on.

  34. Perch are fun to catch and make great eating!!!! Also any time you're trying to get a kid into fishing put them into a mess of perch and you'll get them hooked on fishing, just make sure to show them how to handle them so they don't get pricked!! My grand daughter learned the hard way about not listening to Grandpa!! LOL

  38. I don't find much comfort in the idea of "confidence baits," or that confidence buys you bites. I become confident through success. Success is defined in catches. Good knots, reliable gear, baits that do what you want them to do....that's what I'm confident in. Everything else is a part of the puzzle.

  39. they taste great, but yes the better the water quality the tastier they'll look lol the water i fish them in is crystal clear. and guitarglynn1 sometimes, but i keep the needle nose handy. especially because yellow perch are super sharp lol they'll tear you up if you aren't careful.

  40. I wait till there is 4" of good, clear ice. The # 1 piece of equipment you need for ice fishing is an auger to dill a hole in the ice. Beyond that, tackle will be subjective to the species of fish your chasing....jigging for bluegills is much different than jigging for lake trout. Things like sleds, portable shantys, heaters, graphs/flashers are all nice, and will help, but not "required" like I said..........you need a hole first.

  41. You are going to need tip ups or ice jig rods. You want to try to find deeper water thats going to hold fish. If you dont have a flasher, then just drill holes till your lucky. I generally wait for 3 inches of ice on my lake before i go out on it, and believe websites are out there that tell you how thick the i e has to be to walk on, drive an atv out, or even take a car out there. You can get a hand auger for fairly cheap money that will allow you to drill holes. Feel free to PM me and I can give you more info.

  43. Catt, being somewhat new to these forums, I have read many posts and responses from the long time members. ALL of you have pro's and con's on your views and experiences. But that's the best part. I get to see what point of view from South Eastern fisherman, see the views from the guys out West, up North...etc. See the discussion that incurs and learn or add points of view or questions that we may view viable to the discussion. There are times we all get a bit heated in our discussions....we're fisherman and most of us are pretty hard headed. And the good fisherman ALL may come off arragant because of our sef confidence. But from your list of members, each have their strong points and excel in the way they fish and techiques they use. ALL of which lend their time to posting and letting us learn bits of knowledge and experience we can take from each member where we are lacking and make us more productive and able to share with others that are up and coming in our great sport.

  44. When asked back in February to try Seaguar Red Label & give a review I spooled a reel with 17#. I have not change line since, leaving the same line on for 8 months. With this setup I throw spinner baits, swim jigs, buzz baits, & rat-l-traps. The line exhibited good knot strength, abrasion resistance, & low coil even after 8 months.
