  1. This past Saturday we had a little get together for the KC area members at a little lake a couple hours south. I fished with my brother in law Chris and we'd decided to stay and fish an extra day. We had decided on fishing a city lake a couple miles from where we stayed on Sunday but turns out they don't allow boats on the water on Sunday so off we went to Cedar Creek Valley about an hour back north towards KC. Chris had never fished there and I hadn't been there this year or during the fall so wasn't sure what to expect. I warned Chris that it was a quality lake, not quantity, then they went and proved me wrong. Not only did we catch a bunch of solid fish, we had in the neighborhood of 30-40 fish between the two of us, closer to 50 if you count all my 13 catfish and our 2 drum . At one point, I caught 4 channel cats in a row in a 50 yard stretch. We started slow, trying to force feed them jigs, which they weren't interested in. We both caught one on a jig before I started fishing one of my bladed jigs, it was on after that. I fished my Spicy Shad color and Chris threw Code Black and that was all we needed for the rest of the day. Some of them were really light bites, and some were about jerking the rod out of our hands. We both missed several and I had some that I just couldn't catch up with or keep down that jumped and tossed my bait that were really good quality fish. Weather was less than perfect but the fishing more than made up for it.

  7. It is a bait that catches bass, not a "rule' or background check.. Is there another bait that is banned? A jerkbait and several topwaters have three treble hooks on them, thats 9 hooks.

  8. When I was a young boy, my family was camped out on one of the islands on Lake George, NY. One morning, we realized we were out of toothpaste so my dad let me take the boat, by myself, to town on the other side of the lake to get some. He gave me a five-dollar bill and told me not to dilly-dally. On the way across the lake, I saw a huge bass make a couple of good leaps. I couldn't help but stop and try a few casts. In my haste to get a shot at the big fish, I dropped the fiver over the side and before I could grab it, a good bass came up and swallowed it! I sat there for a long time, wondering what to do, and wondering how much trouble I was going to be in when I got back to camp. I couldn't think of any good story or excuse, so I figured I'd fish for a while and think some more. Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by a jarring strike, almost pulling the rod out of my hands. I pulled in a nice bass, and to my astonishment, he spit out... ... a tube of Crest and three dollars change. Honest. ;-) Tight lines, Bob

  16. No clue anymore. Used to be wrap the fish up in a wet paper towel and freeze it. Probably a better solution now. Not to discourage your decision, but I have a skin mount from the late 80's that looks BAD now, and all of my replicas look great. They last longer and don't fade...... Jeff

  18. It´s not because it has many hooks, it´s because at one time you have more than 1 bait in the water.

  19. Never stop learning. Pay attention and learn from evey fishing trip (yes even if you don't catch anything) and learn from others. This sport is always evolving and when you decide to just get comfortable with "what you prefer to fish" you're going to find yourself on the outside looking in when things get tough and you have no clue on how to adapt to the conditions and change.

  20. I'm constantly "modifying" my technique and lures to try to establish a pattern. Each fish caught should put you closer to finding the pattern at that moment. If we get locked into just one technique, chances are we're giving up fish. I think the harderst part for me is to leave an area that just feels right, but your not getting hit. I know early on, I used to stay waaaaay to long in an area. Think back of a cove, or big flat, etc. not a single doc or point etc. During my first few years on the lakes, I though we were fishing pretty efficiently, and did a good job catching what we could out of a given area. Then one day our club was holding an open tournament, and I did some fun fishing with an old vet. He was fishing water faster with a shakey head then I did with a crank. I honestly thought he was trying to back seat fish me at first he was going so fast, then we started getting a few bites, then midway down that same bank - he pulled up the trolling motor and we took off. He had picked up a pattern, and his experience told him where the fish were. I was still trying to figure out how he was fishing the worm so fast lol. [and he was right, we got into better numbers at the next spot and he did slow down a bit there] The point being, if you are on familiar waters you can get by with fishing an area much more quickly than you can on new waters because you have years (in his case about 30 some on that lake) of experiences to draw from. I've also found that unless you are a pure powerfisherman, most of us spend too long in an area if we are looking for the best 5 fish. Now, if you are fishing just to catch fish - slow down and pick apart an area, nothing wrong with it if you are getting bit. But if there's money on the line, wasting time in unproductive waters is just wasting time. I didn't really answer your question so I guess for me if I'm getting no hits with search baits, I leave an area quickly (now). If I do get a few hits, then we will slow down and start working an area and building out a pattern and changing baits quite often to try to dial in the bite. Each move from then on is an attempt to improve on that pattern. If we're catching them from under docs, then I will buzz right by a big weed bed and just cast a spinner a few times as we pass it just in case, then at the next dock we will slow down and fish it hard. Unless of course we pick up bites in the grass... The biggest mistake I caught myself donig early on when trying to find fish was that I would go from one great looking place, maybe a cove with a defined channel and lots of lay downs and not catch anything, to another great looking place...with the same set up. If they are not holding in a cove with "X" structure and cover, then why go to another cove with the same thing?

  22. My wife and I just started getting into fishing this year. She was the one that suggested it and pushed to get a boat. It's been fun learning to fish together. We will even read online, watch shows and compare strategies together when we aren't on the water.

  24. Congrats again on that PB, man. You earned it. To everyone else... notice how the shoreline is waaaaay back there? Yeah. Couple other friends of mine on the same lake that day, both of em got skunked. They were fishing traditional grasslines and such. Adjust to the bite you are facing, find your fish.

  31. I'm in the Outer Banks this weekend, and I will do a full post soon.... Water was rough today and we could only make it to a wreck about 8 miles out for an hour or so, anchoring wasn't an option so we couldn't target seabass and triggerfish. We decided to do a few drifts over the wreck before heading back in. I dropped down a 3" live spot to see if anyone was hungry. Soon as my rig hit the bottom something thumped it and I swung into a solid fish. After a 15 minute battle I got this Amberjack to the boat. But the best part is the rod I caught him on...a 7'6" flippin stick w/ a diawa millionaire 250 spooled with 40lb power pro. Those who have caught AJs will understand! He almost spooled me 3 times and I don't know how/why he didn't take me into the wreck. I ended up with a bruise about the size of a golfball where I had the butt of the rod jammed against my stomach.

  33. Looks like Sproles will be back for their next game. They have a bye next weekend. I can't stand the Eagles and man was that game painful for me to watch. Especially when Cruz went out. Just utterly painful. Compound that with a dominant performance for Dallas against the Seahawks and I had the lowest of lows this football week. Go Giants ?!?!

  34. I'm sorry I misspoke when I said Heritage. Although you would have great access to that lake, I would go to Celebration Park in Gardner. Easy access and fish can be caught where ever there is water.

  38. Location and presentation are much, much more important than anything else in this thread. Two things even seasoned measurebaters get wrong. If you're worried about IR/NIR, and how it might effect your tournament results, you already lost. If you're that good that you can fine tune this, then I humbly bow. That's not to say this isn't interesting stuff, but whenever the discussion turns towards using the info as an advantage, I start smelling bad science, and marketing hype. That's just my opinion.

  39. Hey guys! I guess im over excited and wanted to share. I went out today to catch some fall action. And it sure was just that! The fish were hitting hard! I caught my pb on a black spinnerbait ($1 from walmart) and cut the tail from a black fluke to use as a trailer. They were pounding it ! Then I caught one bigger yet than the last! It was very thrilling. I wont post #s to save from embarrassment, i just started fishing in april and have become obsessed.

  42. Average bass (both Green & Brown is probably a pound maybe a pound and a half. For all you studs with a 3 pound average, you're missing you're calling. Yea, but you're fishing those mutant Lake Erie bass & they have a Completely Freaky Large Gobie Fed Frame. That's not fair A-Jay

  43. This is a very astute observation and EXCELLENT reply! Obviously there is a huge market at this pricing point and it is difficult to find fair comparisons. I think you have done a great job with this post.

  44. Well, in order to rank a rod from 1 to 10, I think you need to fish with a 10 sometime.

  45. Compared to what? I'll use my Avid ACV70MHF as an honest "8" for reference. That would put the Berkley at about a "3" or "4". I bought the exact stick while on a family vacation, and for what I payed was pretty satisfied with it. It sure beats fishing with nothing, right? What I'm getting at here, it matters little what others think - you've got it and you like it. It will serve you well.
