  3. I can verify that. I've done quite a bit of diving. Being a fisherman and a diver is a nice combination... but it can almost put you off fishing.. I used to have my brother on a floating dock above jigging a worm or minnow in front of schools of crappie, bluegills and large mouth bass. Congregating in the shade under the dock in about 15 feet of water. The vast majority of them would simply not react to the bait at all. Sometimes it would literally bounce off their faces and they simply would move slightly out of the way. The only time it became interesting to many of them was when a smaller fish tried to grab it... then the larger fish would impose themselves and go for it... It was very interesting to watch.... but as I say potentially quite discouraging.... It's a shame I did all that in the days before easy video... I bet those films would have been interesting to watch in more detail...

  4. Braid backing gives you a lighter spool than mono. That means something if you are casting lighter lures. Fill your spool up with whatever backing you decide on that is roughly the same diameter that your main line is going to be. Tie on a little bit heavier lure than you are going to throw with this combo and make some casts. Some people recommend doubling their casts. That means after you cast out with the heavier lure, pull an equal amount off and then refill with your main line.

  6. i agree with what Darren said...usually it is cheap mono then flouro or braid, not the other way around.

  7. You can certainly do it, but IMO, braid is an awfully expensive filler unless you have some laying around, unused. Better to fill with cheap mono, then fluoro, IMO....

  8. My advice is to find the job that you're most interested in. Far too many ppl worry about money first, they later realize that they're stone cold miserable. My little brother is a chemical engineer specialty was petroleum, made.6 figures and was miserable. With a wife and four kids in tow he changed career paths nowhere near the money butt is happy, that's something money can't buy. Trade school, college or on the job training doesn't matter if u hate the job. Most successful ppl are absolutely passionate about what they do.

  10. Go 734. The 733 is a GREAT rod, and honestly, I use a 3 power for more "fun"... But if it's tournament time, the 4 power will get the nod. The 733 is a bit more finesse and can be a blast to fish, but for what you described, the 734 is definitely the way to go. The LURE weight rating isn't always the proper way to go by picking a rod... Can the 733 handle 3/4oz baits? Yes, with utmost ease... BUT when you're talking a bait like a jig (many times with a very stout hook), or fishing in moderate cover with a texas rig (might you be using a more stout worm hook too?) -- now lure weighting isn't the deciding factor, and rather the power you need to have a good hook up ratio with stouter hooks.

  11. Another custom Rod thread with no pics!? If the discrepancy isn't worth mentioning, why mention it? I sure would like to know what blank makes the ultimate shakey, Senko, tube stick. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess it's an Mhx high mod.

  12. I am working all weekend. Good luck out there guys.... Once I am done with this current 10 day stretch of working everyday I will have 11 days off. The bass wont know what hit them.

  13. bob, I will come by and pick up your truck and boat for the weekend. I will give you a full report on Monday. Just leave the keys under that front door mat. I will be by about 4:30 am.

  15. I've seen you write this a few times. Stop it. The 734 is the most versatile rod in the line up and anybody who fishes Dobyn's rods will tell you the same thing .Listen to any interview rich/gary do on Western Bass. They praise the 734. 734 would be much better suited for what you want to use and can more than any rod in the series. The 733, while it can work, will become a chore in cover. I own both.

  19. Poppers are for fishing targets like stickups or stumps. Walking baits are good for covering water and when fish are really chasing shad and baitfish and clear water. Buzzbaits I like in dirtier water and around heavier cover. Prop baits are good target fishing baits as well and seem to excel when bass are feeding on bluegills.

  23. I ran into this a while back - my solution was first to let my wrist rest by fishing with spinning gear for a while. Then I rigged up two jerk baits - one on casting gear and one on spinning gear. This enabled me to spread / share the workload with both wrists. Fish one rig for a while, then switch to the other rig. Kept me fresh, allowed me to fish all day and most importantly I didn't hurt anything. Good Luck A-Jay

  24. I will say the 734 is my to all around rod. Dobyns heavy action rods are more versatile than most other companies' because the action compensates for the power. I've thrown everyrhing from trigs to spooks and squarebills on mine...amazing rod

  26. Ok, I have a Citica 200D spooled with 17 lb test Trilene Big Game that ...... I use for exactly that size and swimbait weight , in other words, it´s used for swimbaiting. I don´t see why are you worried that it won´t hold enough 20 lb line, you don´t need 200 yds of 20 lb test line for swimbaiting, you ain´t gonna cast 100 yards of line with a 2 oz bait, so there will still be plenty line in your spool after you cast. On the subject of a deeper spool, DSV. spool, if you don´t call Shimano you will never know if it´s not available.

  27. OK, I'll tell ya one of my secret fall baits....shh now...*looks around*... a blk/blue space monkey on a 3/8 jighead. Smokes em!

  28. You are definitely not going to get comfortable amount of line on that Citica if you want to use Yozuri Hybrid. For something under 2 oz, I would use a mono or copolymer that has standardized rated weight of 20 pounds (roughly .370mm width) and you will be able to get 100 meters of that line on your 200 sized Shimano. I don't think you will like that reel very much though. I was using my Chronarch E with 50 pound power pro and 17 pound CXX leader, and I felt very stressed launching it since the reel couldn't take the heavy pressure from the big baits. I advise you to go with a larger low profile or a round reel after you sell your Citica.

  29. Bracing is just a band aid. Bracing will give a supported feeling, however they are making the muscles lazy. Unless your situation has become very chronic then I would look into bracing. Here is a website I quickly found that can be a start for you. http://www.hughston.com/hha/a.seven.htm Look into the exercise before you decide to begin bracing.

  30. Sell the citica and pickup a Cardiff 301. Perfect for baits that size and 17-25lb line

  31. Short answer is most of them Here in Indiana, the DNR has done population studies on many of our popular reservoirs, and it's not unusual to find an average of 20-30 8" or larger bass per surface acre of water. Thought of another way, when they do electrofishing, the typical catch rate range is 50-200 bass per hour (CPUE). So the simple answer is there are almost always a lot more bass swimming around where you are fishing compared to what you are actually catching. -T9

  32. Hey Chris- Have you done a search on the forums on this topic? There is a lot of information that has been discussed already on the subject. There are a lot of us that are Yo-Zuri Hybrid fans, me included. I'm also a fan of P-Line Floroclear. But I use both as leaders only, not mainline. McCoy gets some good reviews, tho I've not tried it. Give it a try and see if it fits your fishing style!

  34. If you aren't going to college with a purpose in mind, and by purpose I mean a well thought out career choice with end goals in sight don't bother. You can make a lot of money with or without a college education, just depends on how hard you want to work for it. You have some amount of skill now as a young machine operator, why not try and build on that with trade school. Broaden your skill set within your own industry as a starting point to make a transition to college a more feasible transition; welding, programming, CAD, or some other engineering modeling software (Pro-E or Solidworks) would all be good choices. The more skills you have the harder it is to let you go, and the easier it is to pay you more and give you more responsibility (which = more $$$).

  36. In order to be considered a Texas Rig, in my book it has to have a sliding bullet weight. Otherwise, it's just weedless on a offset worm hook.
    1 point
  37. Texas rigs are always weighted, if it ain´t then it ain´t a Texas rig.

  39. I keep some gear in my SUV and some in my boat and some in my truck. I usually plan a trip but if I find time I will go to a lake, pond, river or creek near me. About an hour ago I went to a lake down the street from where I work to throw my new Lews Speed spool I got and lined it up with a Spinnerbait. There was one guy on the dock and he must have thought I was nuts walking up in a shirt and tie. I cast 8 times and landed about a 3 lb bass. I said out loud "OK that works well" and left to go back to work. That guy really must have thought I was crazy. True story. I guess I'm always ready to fish.

  41. They are two separate things to me. I don't find myself using a lure often where weighted or unweighted is a decision I have to make. Like. ... unweighted I'm throwing flukes, floating worms, horny toads, maybe a senko. These baits and presentations are generally an unweighted deal. So while the hook is technically "t-rigged", I don't really consider it an " unweighted t-rig". In my mind a t-rig is a plastic with a bullet sinker rigged weedless and generally fished on the bottom. If I tell you that I caught em on a Texas rigged worm. .... you can bet I'm not talking about say, a paddle tail or speed worm where- its the same rigging set up - but you cast and wind it in. I don't consider that a t-rig. That's how my mind classifies it- right or wrong- so I have to say weighted .....always.

  45. My New Cowboy Boots Bert at 80 years old, always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home.Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?" Margaret at age 75, looked him over and replied, "Nope." Frustrated as all get out, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the new boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different NOW???" Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan response, "Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, and it'll be hanging down again tomorrow." Furious, Bert yells out, "AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?" "Nope. Not a clue", she replied. "IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!" Without missing beat, old Margaret replies, "Shoulda bought a hat, Bert.Shoulda bought a hat."

  46. If I spent upwards of a $1000, then caught fish that on average that don't run more than a few pounds I'd be both disappointed and depressed. It's all about the fish for me, gear is secondary.
