  1. The only problem with the accuracy of that poll will be the number of 50+ guys who don't spend anytime online. Instead of coming to this website, those old-timers hang out down at the dock or bait shop

  2. THANKS ! It IS a very nice reel - I'm glad I bought it (but see the following!). I'm not noticing any "geariness" in the Morrum...but then, I'm not too particular that way. The clutch bar has a little play when the clutch is disengaged but again, nothing I noticed until you asked and I wiggled it a bit. They are both very nice reels, both have advanced braking systems, and both cast very well as a result. My CQ100-14 certainly palms smaller but then the Morrum has a line capacity greater than a CQ200-14 so it should palm a bit big. At the end of the day, I think you buy the Morrum if you really want/need the higher IPT. Otherwise, and especially if one didn't have any high-end round reels, I would certainly recommend that they buy the Conquest first, over the Morrum. The Conquest just exudes that solid, quality feeling, more so than the Morrum. For me personally? I REALLY wanted the IPT offered by the Morrum and will be putting it to good use. And, I felt I had enough Conquest/Calcutta gear on hand to cover my needs for a while...at least until a 50-size Conquest 14 is released...

  8. Assunpink Lake, N.J. 10/04/2014 Caught my Personal Best It was raining all day, but weather reports had clear skies after 2 p.m. so I took a chance and loaded up my canoe and headed for the lake. I made a good decision because the sky slowly cleared up as I was fishing. To my surprise, I was the only person on the lake from 2:00 - 5:30, at which time I left. Around 5:00 I caught my personal best since I started fishing last year. I was using a Cabela's brand Real Image HD Series in Bluegill flavor in about 10 feet of water. Thanks for looking.

  14. You can always use the motor trim switch to help get you back in the boat. Step on the lower unit & trim up. Just a thought for guys who don't have a ladder.

  15. It's bad this year for sure. I've watched Dallas get robbed off 3 possible pick 6's due to early whistles calling the play dead. Why not let them play and go to the replay if you aren't 100% sure? The ruffing the passer call gets made a bit too quickly also, I don't think a 300lb man flying through the air can stop himself if the ball beats him by inches.

  16. I've also seen the variation where they use a slip bobber so it's kind of like vertically jigging a spoon at a distance.

  21. So I went out this morning to put what I learned on here into action: 1 bite no hook up, I believe it was a trout, there was a boil on the surface and the water temps were pretty cold, that doesn't mean there were no bass around, but I'm pretty sure it was a trout. About 4 or 5 cast later in the same area I hook into a really nice rainbow trout. Bent down to pick it up to remove the hook and it unbuttoned itself. 0 for 2, but getting closer. Moved around a bit with no luck. It was time I hit the road to go to work so I made a 2 casts at the spot where I had some luck and low and behold, I landed a rainbow trout! It was bleeding pretty good, so instead of going thru the process of taking a pic, I decided to get it back in the water. I know, pics or it didn't happen, that's up to you...LOL Anyway, here's what I used: JF and Bluebasser, you're absolutely right, getting the right speed is key. It felt great to actually catch a fish with these lures and I can see why they've been around for so long. They have unbelievable action and what surprised me was you can actually fish them pretty slow. I always thought you had to fish these fast which is probably why I was doing it all wrong to begin with. Many thanks for the tips guys, all were very helpful. I like how you added you favorite spoons to the thread, now I have something for the Bait Monkey!

  23. Yeah - the problem now is getting time-on-water with any particular combo. I'm up to 47 BC reels, and 37 of those are on rods at the moment. Even though I fish every day, there's just not enough days in a year to get a lot of mileage on all the gear. AND, the PQ 5-Year Challenge is still going on and I try to fish it nearly every day so some of the other gear gets left on the rack. AND, while I'm at 1,467 bass caught so far this year, I actually catch more than half of them on spinning gear so that's even less chance for the BC gear to score. Just about all the round reels shown have scored fish (I've got 2 50XTs and a 100XT that still need to score) - but it varies from a couple to over 100, depending on the reel. I've had the Morrum for about 3 weeks and have only had time to get 8 fish with it. This year, the two most used round reels are probably one of the Conquest 50s and the CTE-100DC. I started using the 100DC as my main cranking reel on September 7 and have scored 39 bass (and one 38.5 pound grass carp) with it in the last month. I still have a bunch more cranking outfits to put mileage on this year though so the 100DC will have to go back on the rack soon, AND, the season is winding down now so there won't be much "catching" left for this year. So much gear, so little time.

  25. Twitch the bobber, spoon lifts up and then swings and wobbles back down until it's under the bobber. I prefer small jigs for it but the Cleo works too. I prefer the 1/8oz Cleo for trout. Like J said, retrieve speed is vital. Get it so it's fluttering side to side during the retrieve instead of doing full revolutions and the catch rate will go up big time. I've caught lots and lots of bass on the 1/8oz Cleo too.

  27. Buzzbaits will run on their side for the same reason that spinnerbaits will do the same, or even "windmill," and it usually isn't because it's bent. How the bait runs is a simple function of physics. You need to match retrieve speed with weight and mass of the "body" and the torque of the blade. Larger blades create more torque that will try and roll the bait over. A slower retrieve speed or heavier head weight will help offset this. Lighter heads simply don't have the same keel effect to keep the bait running upright as heavier heads. More skirt and trailer mass works against the head weight to try and roll the bait over. Consider thinning things down, going to a smaller trailer, or even no trailer. Faster retrieve speeds also tend to potentially roll the bait. If your bait rolls on its side, first try slowing down your retrieve speed. Lastly, angle between head wire arm and the blade wire arm makes a difference - the smaller that angle, the more stable the bait. So, in the future, if your buzzbait or spinnerbait doesn't run right, it is usually because these factors aren't "in synch" or matched properly for that particular bait.

  29. Fish are scattered When they are aggressively eating (which at some point in the day, they are), they will kill all your moving baits- swim jigs, cranks, spinnerbaits, Rage Rigs, etc Always fish a jig on the drop offs, or next to any isolated structure, like a submerged tree or rock pile You will find some fish shallow, and some deep As the water cools, don't expect to catch a ton of fish, but do be ready for when one hits, cuz it could be a good one (for real) The fish will change patterns on you throughout the course of the day several times, so check back in on likely structure often

  31. Just like A-Jay's post above, I have an old-and-new post.... The new generation has arrived to join the oldsters... Early 1960s Ambassadeur 5000, 1978 Ambassadeur 1500C, brand spankin' new Ambassadeur Morrum ZX3600: IVCB-4 braking system - it's a GREAT casting machine. Palms OK for me (about like a 100-size Calcutta) but the edges on the sideplate could be radiused a bit more. 6.3:1 gearing - 28" IPT - VERY cool. I wish there were more round reels with higher IPTs. It gets the ultimate approval rating - it works, reels in fish...

  32. This news pops every once in a while. I'm against treating it with a chemical. Plus, it's not feasible to treat all the Great Lakes and connected waterways. What I have seen work on a couple smaller Finger Lakes is to lower the water level by 15' or so in winter. This isn't eradication, but it controls them. I'm not even sure they are a "bad" thing. No one complains about EU milfoil or alewife anymore. They've only made the fishing better.

  37. Back reeling or free spooling allows you to adjust drag pressure from light to heavier based on conditions . If a fish hits at the boat with little line out you can feather the drag from easy to hard as the fish dictates. If you have experience with it and are comfortable it has its place.

  39. I spoke with Keith about this new series of rods. It's supossed to be an all new blank that's just as good if not better than the endurance blanks. They're also using popular lengths and powers from both series. There was no mention of stopping production on the Endurance series and I would hope that's not the case. It's my favorite rod for $150 and they're hard to beat at $200.

  40. Stiff, average, mediocre fluorocarbon. There is certainly worse on the market, and certainly much better. Fluorocarbon ain't cheap though, so a free spool of decent fluorocarbon is never a bad thing!

  41. The buzzbait in question, is coming in laying nearly flat horizontal, with the spinner on the right side of the line, and the skirt/trailer on the left. I favor the explanation that something is bent. But, nonetheless...it all doesnt matter anymore now, I lost that buzzbait yesterday.

  43. It's already a very successful hunt, Jeff. I'm still able to do it. ..............My daughter came out in the garage Saturday night. Nicholas, Joe and I were all dressed in our camo. Danielle started to cry. She said it had been a long time since she'd seen me in hunting attire. There we were , three generations all decked out. I think the fact that Nicholas is continuing to look more like a man than a boy has some bearing on her tears as well. It was a GOOD DAY!................right now as I type this, there's a laborer in our kitchen jackhammering up our old ceramic tile. There are three sisters painting the downstairs. And Kit just went for one of my "happy pills". I'll be glad when this day is over!!..............take good care, Jeff. I'll keep you in the loop.

  46. +2 (I'm probably older than you too, Bob. ) I just wanted to warn you that stopping at 3 is probably highly unlikely. I was new to baitcast reels in '09 (hence my display name). I did improve the quality of my spinning gear since '09, but they seldom get used. I like BC reels much better. I am a little leery of telling you how many reels I now have. Wouldn't want to scare you off. Raul has it right. OP, use what you like. Fishing for most of us is a fun hobby. Have fun.
