  1. My buddy hit me up to fish after work tonight. Local reservoir that can only be fished from shore and it gets hit HARD. I was fishing from probably the most popular spot too. Felt some weight and saw the line move. Set the hook and started reeling. Realized when it was just my handle turning and not the spool it was a good fish. Then the whoosh noises definitely let me know it was a good one. Made a small jump close to shore and then I landed her. My buddy said that's probably a 5lbr. I told him it's over 6 for sure. I never usually fish wacky but I'm sure glad I did. My Pb thus far is 6.5. That was until tonight.

  2. This new saltless formula will allow fairly clear baits that show glitter well. Same size, weight, sink rate, and softness as a real one. Durability test are underway. Sorry but I do not sell them. Thanks to Baitjunkys and Wally for initial recon

  5. Never fished the baitcasters but the spinning reels are the BEST on the market. The president is a better choice than most reels costing twice as much.

  8. A lost Oklahoman needs your help! I'm taking a trip to the great state of Montana this coming week, and I need some advice on fishing. Being a bass fisherman I would like to know if I could catch bass in Montana and have good luck, or should I just throw that idea out the window and fish for trout or other species. We will be spending 3 days in West Yellowstone and the rest of our trip in a small town right outside of Billings. Any information is good information.

  9. Made an order ahead of a recent trout fishing trip. I need a few items to restock my trout bag, and also ordered some Columbia SPF gloves.I received everything except the gloves. The package had a note stating the gloves would ship in a different package. The trip came and went, and no gloves. I forgot about them until Cabelas sent an email asking me to rate the gloves. I sent them a note back saying I had not received the gloves. They sent back a note saying the gloves had shipped and gave me tracking number. I tracked the shipment, and discovered the Post Office had delivered them the day after the first package arrived. I replied to Cabelas that I had not received them. I explained that the USPS had, in the past delivered some of my packages to neighbors, and vice versa. I have delivered a couple of neighbor's packages to them, and have had them do the same. I told Cabelas that either I now had neighbors who were not so neighborly, or that they had been stolen. Cabelas emailed back that they would credit my account for the gloves. I sent back that I did not feel they were required to pay for a USPS mistake, or for "un-neighborly" behavior. They replied that crediting my account was no problem for them, and that the gloves were out of stock, and they would notify me when the items were back in stock. Customer service does not get any better than this. Hat's off to Cabelas from a long-time, and now even more loyal, customer.

  13. With 10' visibility I would try glides. S-Wavers are great baits and they are cheap. You could also pick up a converted Deps 175 SS for fairly cheap or maybe a 145 if the 175 is to heavy. Also the Gan Craft S-Song works great for a bluegill glide bait.

  15. Owner just brought out some new hooks at I-cast this year for that exact purpose. Can't find the link for it. I have used the siwash style hooks before as a substitute.

  16. I have Rat LTraps, Rattlin Raps, Cordell Spots, Strike King Diamond Shad, Bobmer Rattlin RRR, Bayou Boogies, Heddon Sonics. In my experience you want to have different brands, all sound different, all catch fish but there are days one work better than others.

  17. Slide out deeper and look for submerged grass beds that they haven't sprayed #1 or been affected. Most times when they treat grass, they treat what they can see. Next, look for structure/bottom changes close by where the fish or bait can retreat to. If you have fished there in the spring the same places should hold fish when the grass isn't available....bridges, rip rap, docks, and brushpiles. Look for other cover that the fish will shift to when they don't have the grass option.

  18. I really like the Xcalibur one knockers but I also like the Rapala Clackin' Rap and the new Rippin Rap. There are days I really like the old school Rat-L-Trap and if I need to go slow but still make noise I reach for the Cotton Cordell Super Spot. I don't really have a favorite as I found that out of all the brands there are times when one will really do well while others not so much. As I said, Super Spots if I need to go slow as they work better as slower speeds than the others but there are times a one knocker is just the ticket so my favorite you can say is all of them as they all work and some better than others under certain conditions.

  19. An excellent buy! Regardless of trends toward low profile reels and split handled rods, the Ambassadeurs can still do anything any other reel can do.

  20. I've added a levelwind bearing to one each of my Alphas, Fuegos and Zillions. I can easily tell the difference. Every time I tear down one of those reels, I have an extra bearing to clean. Add the handle bearings. That is a nice little , easy improvement. There is no benefit to be gained adding levelwind bearings.

  31. It requires a lot of disassembly and reassembly, if you do not have much experience in this area, I would suggest having someone do it for you. You can upgrade the bushings in the knobs on the handle as well, it is very straight forward, and does not require much if any experience.

  32. How many reels have you dissasembled ? Send them to DVT for that plus a polishing and professional service. Reel teeny tiny itsy bitsy parts have the bad habit of getting lost.

  34. Although the Rage Tail line of baits are not made to float, there are ways to take advantage of both their awesome action and give the fish a higher standing tail or claws. A stand-up jig head will elevate them. Although the claws or tails will not stay elevated, the bait's body will be at an angle that will keep them off the bottom. I've been using a long shanked, shakey head to acomplish this during the last month or so as the fish have been ignoring a faster moving bait and my love affair with Rage Tails is still in the 'smoking hot' stage.

  36. I really like the Gama Magic eye shorts http://www.gamakatsu.com/fishing-hooks.php?pid=1108 The idea of short shanks is you replace stock trebles with one size larger hook.

  39. The biggest you can afford. There is no such thing as "too much" trolling motor. If it were me, and you had room for the all the batteries, and money wasn't an issue, I would go with a 36v, 101lb thrust. I am going to agree with everyone else though, and your going to want AT LEAST the 24v, 70lb thrust motor.

  41. The cold winter temperatures killed a large percentage of the yellowtail in the Tennessee River. Fortunately threadfin reproduce quickly, sometimes spawning multiple times during the year if conditions are right. In the meantime the river system offers a bounty of alternative forage. As far as fishing goes, the impact has been favorable for those of us that occasionally fish live bait. Right now the baitfish are hard to find and capture, but if you can get them, it's Katy Bar The Door! http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/141661-pickwick-719-720/

  42. Like the show I watched a few days ago with Roland Martin in an inflatable kayak. He seemed out of place in it. I watched the whole show because he was in a kayak. But the reasons he gave for fishing one simply seemed like talking points a sales man would give.

  43. The link to the blog mentioned here didn't work for me, but I read some of the discussion. It's funny. While I was fishing yesterday, I was thinking about this. I plan on fishing some tournaments next year. I have no sponsors, and probably never will, but there are charitable organizations I wouldn't mind endorsing, and was thinking about having a jersey made for that purpose. It was just a random thought that will probably go nowhere. I know most of the people I see with the shirts, decals on their cars, etc..., are sending a message to people about their lifestyle. Kind of like wearing a concert T-shirt, or something with the logo of your favorite team. You want people to know something about you. I'm a bass fisherman! I like the Ramones! I'm a Cardinals fan! Where it gets goofy is when people start slapping all kinds of logos on their boats, or wearing jerseys with logos, and paying for the privilege to do that. Everyone knows you are a fisherman. Let those who have agreements with the company do that. What should the bar be? Free stuff? A discount? Financial compensation? That depends on the level of the fisherman. But if guys start selling themselves short, it impacts everyone in the business. I know tournament fishing isn't cheap, but you are a brand as well, and you have to manage that, if you get to that point in your career. I try not to wear anything with obnoxious logos on it, anywhere. Not just fishing. That's a personal preference. I find it tacky. Obviously my shoes have logos, my shirts will often have a small logo, my jeans have a logo. That's all hard to avoid. But I don't begrudge the guy with the Castrol hat and the Berkley shirt. They were probably free, and if he likes them, why should he care what I think.

  44. Interesting discussion. Is there any credibility left in anything/anyone that needs a sponsor to "survive"? I.E. what you are talking about...a professional sport or the like? That's a rhetorical question...we all have our own answer to it.

  45. Siphon brushes work OK, just not as well as gravity feed brushes. They require a little more air pressure to suck the paint up into the brush and there is more to clean between colors and at the end of the day. The best and cheapest gravity feed brush I know of is the Iwata Revolution B, which sells for around $85-90 retail. It is made in Japan, has great quality, is durable, and its .3mm tip is right sized for painting crankbaits in my experience.

  47. This is another example of what I said above. The tip may be soft without necessarily being a slow action. The resonance you're seeing is what we refer to in custom rod circles as the rod's speed ( separate from action). A rod with a faster resonance (as in returning to still after being put in motion sooner than another) will be more sensitive and crisp. All these aspects are measurable with the system called CCS. This being used more widely in fly fishing circles but I don't see any traction among OTC rod manufacturers. Trial and error and posting for other's experiences as you've done are your best bet to find what you're looking for. Unfortunately it won't be directly related to any labeled spec.
