  7. Here’s one mystery solved: I’m still around, sort of... I’m living in the Philippines. New Zealand?? Believe me, I wish! While my wife teaches and our son attends school here, I’m spending my time writing and researching. I’m hoping to get some books out, working almost simultaneously on an archery book and one on bass. Also there’s one on deck on trout. And I’m putting together some material on human/nature connections, and observation skills. Been in touch with Roger a bit (RoLo). He's on and off; You'll likely see him again. Good to hear Muddy's doing well. Hey John, you know we actually met once, although neither of us knew it at the time. I was back east visiting my Dad and we stopped by one of my old haunts -that quarry on... . You were just getting your gear out to fish and I asked you about the place. It sure had changed, with the beavers in there. And it was public. Back when I fished it (in the 80s), it was private. Anyway, I didn’t know it was you until later when I saw a pic of you on BR. I’ve got family in Roch and Erie. Mebbe some day eh? Nice to know I’m missed anyway. Thanks for the kind words folks. I do check in every now and then but am trying not to get sucked in too deep. I’m not one for short answers as many of you probably know. There are two bass lakes here on Luzon, and if I get there I’ll write a report –fish or no fish. Bass in tropical waters show some interesting limitations that help define them –or stretch that definition some. Cheers, all!

  8. 1.. No matter how many cars you pass, there will always be someone in front of you. There is no front of the line. So just relax. you'll get there. 2..Just because your light has turned green, don't just jump out there. Because after the other light has turned red, the next three to five cars are coming on through...at least in Cincinnati. 3..And the biggest one, you can never drive fast enough for the car behind you. Remember, he's looking for the front of the line. Hootie

  14. So let me get this straight..... That post was directed at (you said "you" so i'm assuming it was directed at somebody specifically..) either Hootie or myself (still not quite clear since you quoted both of our posts..) in which NEITHER of us have said a word in this thread (or even argued with you...) defending our stance on rods with you..? Ok...that makes total sense.

  15. Fished Clinton Saturday with sizzlefry, steady bite of smallies on squarebill and the ned rig, last fish of the day was a 4 pound hybrid off the dam on a Rodney.

  16. I use my own. Having said that, the information gathered from shows, books, and sites like this one allowed me to learn the basics of bass behavior, bass seasons, bass use of structure, and how the bass generally reacts to its environment. That allows me to derive patterns when I am on the water. A lot of patterns will overlap between individuals because there are generalities of bass behavior that can be applied by everyone to come to the same conclusions. There can be numerous patterns that work at any given day and time, just as on tough days there may be only one or two that work.

  17. I agree with SenkoGuru on the price of the Dobyns rods, but it isn't because they aren't good. The reason is because they are commanding a price in the same ball park as G.Loomis and St. Croix, and those rods are made here in America with mostly Fuji Components. Dobyns rods are made over seas with Fuji Reel seats but Kigan guides, they aren't bad but they aren't as costly as Fuji, I have no trouble with this as I also like Pac Bay but the problem is price. Being that the rods are made overseas and use less costly components you would thing the rods would be moderately priced but they aren't, they are very expensive for a rod made overseas and not in Japan. Labor cost in Korea aren't as cheap as China but it is still less than here or Japan and that alone should make the rods more affordable, they are good rods or they wouldn't have the following but from the rods I've used in the series and their respective prive point, I'd have to say that they are a tad bit higher than what they should be but if they work for at that price point then fine. I'll state it one more time, this is my opinion and it has nothing to do with rod quality, the Dobyns series of rods is well made, I just feel that the components along with overseas production would make for a little less expense, I think the Loomis GL2 isn't close to what you get and I would say the Saavy is a better rod but I understand that some of the price is due to the labor cost. I don't dislike the Dobyns rods, I've only used the Champion and the Saavy rods and at the price point I can honestly say they aren't for me but it isn't just price, it is feel and they don't feel good to me as I prefer a lighter rod and I'm in the minority in that I don't care for the ECS reel seat that is used on their rods.

  20. Oh man, sounds like a hurricane. You're in the eye right now. Any question why hurricanes are named after women? Sorta fits doesn't it. Had a rough day with my wife today too. Sun was shining, blue skies, birds chirping, nice cool breeze...then WHAM! She hits like a hurricane with the warning of tornado. Just like last month!

  22. At night all your senses heighten because it's usually quite and you can't see well so you become more aware. The other factor is the bass are often more active at night and less aware of our presence, it all adds up to better "feel" of what's going on underwater. You must concentrate to feel you lure without outside interference, hard to shut out the sun and daytime distractions. Tom

  23. Is your finger always on the part of the line as it comes off the reel while fishing your bait? Do take up as much slack as possible? Your rod tip at 11 or 12 o'clock? IF YOU FEEL ANYTHING DIFFERENT OR SEE THE LINE MOVE OR STOP MOVING SET THE HOOK! A bass can pick up your bait and swim slowly away without you knowing it. Concentrate on the feel every second your bait is in the water. You will be surprised at the number if light hits you can get and totally miss them.

  24. I'll repeat again! Night fishing will force you to stop watching your line & force you to feel your lure. While no one feels 100% of their bites night well increase your strike/hookup ratio. I aint talking two or three night trips but for a year or two.of nothing but nights. Now after night fishing your day fishing will vastly improve. I'll guarantee y'all your sense of feel, awareness, & productivity will sky rocket.

  26. I caught this 4.1 pounder today on a 5" Baby Bass Senko wacky rigged. He was just short of 20 inches. My heart raced for 30 minutes. (-:

  27. Due to the popularity to popularity of this topic, i put together this short video. There are more than 5 ways to rig it, of course, and i mention several others in the video. Enjoy! http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/how-to-rig-senko.html Note that I don't mention the use of O-rings for wacky rigging. When I found a broken wacky ring at the bottom of my livewell, I stopped recommending their use. I never used them to begin with, so clearly it broke on the hookset when somebody else was using it, and the fish ate the Senko. Not good!

  29. This is going really sideways really fast. In my opinion they are worth the $169 amount. You have a lot of good options out there at this point truly. I'm not going to sit here and tell you one brand isn't good then drop one word about a brand I'm "recommending" to tell you that is the one you should buy. We all have our favorite rods that's rather obvious. Try to find a rod that fits you and a brand that you trust and agree with the actions. I don't feel the need to sit around and constantly push a brand or say that another brand is garbage including things like "we lost another". Some brands have earned a vendetta against them. I'm not really sure why aside from some very happy customers. The thing about the Internet is you have thousands of people telling you something they "think" or "heard" without much you can do to validate what they are saying. I would be a happy guy on a few techniques with the savvy series... There are some that the actions aren't great for. I just love that people keep bringing up things like sensitivity which is one thing that just isn't lacking to me... But to each their own!

  32. Nice buy. For the palmability, proven reliability, and the fact that it is still one of the lightest reels in the industry even though it is more than a few years it has been around should tell you something. I don't think you will be disappointed. I would fish it stock and likely flush the bearings and properly lube them and even have the reel supertuned. Those two things together will put the performance up there another notch. Most reel techs will do it for under $30 which is great upgrade. The stock bearings in the Core are some of the nicest Shimano uses. And yes the bearings between the Curado, Scorpion, and Core are different as you progress up the line. I was told by a reel tech that does thousands of Shimano reels that once cleaned and lubed the bearings on the core are close to 10. I don't mean a 10 on the abec rating scale like the 5 and 7 series which are popular but a 10 in terms of overall quality and performance. Enjoy!

  33. I was going to suggest lots and lots of jewelry and flowers. I think you need some thing more powerful. Find a catholic priest and get a exorcism done. If that don't work. You can give these guys a call. Also you said she was going to the sisters. Lets hope the wife don't show the mother and sister. What you have posted to this site about them. So if I disappear they found me. Who am i kidding. I am sure I can walk faster then them running. Disclaimer: If you are married or are serious about your loved one. I would suggest you to not listen to what I just wrote. One that note. Raider I wish you and the family the best of luck.

  36. Went out today to the back of banks lake where the winds been blowing towards for a couple days and there were tons of bait fish all stacked on that side, started throwing topwaters, cranks, frogs, everything... I couldn't for the life of me get a bite so I decided to slow down and tied on a strike king swim jig with a fat Albert trailer and caught one keeper, then didn't get another bite for a good while but finally got one on the zoom trick worm. Pretty slow day overall, its been a tough week around here... I know I was fishing the best spot in the lake but just couldn't produce many bites. Nice day though I enjoyed it! Got to see a guy pulling a little boat with a motorcycle too, that's new lol

  41. Pick a color that matches the bait fish in the waters you fish and get some swimbait trailers to match the chatterbait. Different chatter baits have different color blades gold chrome and black. I usually cast them out n twitch it while it's drops then rip it up you will feel the vibration then let it drop again and repeat that or try your own retrieve to see what the bass want.

God help you sloan zp it took a man to do what you have done . Especially the patience you have shown.

  45. I tip my hat to anyone who can raise daughters without winding up indicted for murder. Good for you for raising one who can come to you and admit that she's made a mistake and needs to make some big changes. Some 25 year olds still choose to equip themselves with the mentality of 15 year olds and would stay with the jerk out of pride and parent-spite. Congrats to you that when she did realize things were wrong that she did something about it, if not as soon as you would have liked.
