  1. Is it cool if I go in the street outside your house and chip golf balls toward and around your property and every once in awhile make contact with your property? I know we are playing semantics here but you have to be respectful. We all know that that one guy that didn't want you fishing up in his dock ruined your chances of your lifetime PB, he is a jerk, it's not against the law, blah blah. Just move on. It's not the end of the world, folks. Lets be adults. I'll tell you right now, if I had lake front property, saw somebody fishing my dock and heard all the banging, clanking impact from weights on my dock and boat, I would say something for sure. I wouldn't mind people fishing my dock but I have seen the majority of people that snoop around docks. They smack everything and that is enough to tick the owner off to where nobody has special dock privileges. They get fed up. Wear a shoe on the other foot.

  2. My wife and I had been debating getting our son a life jacket so he could go out in the boat. We have had several days of unseasonably cool weather so we decided to get him one. Supposed to be for kids up to 50lbs but at only 7.5 months Lake had the straps extended as far as they'd go and he still didn't really fit very well. He loves being outside, he wasn't a huge fan of the life jacket however. He did really seem to enjoy while we were cruising along though. Had enough time to make a few cast and he got to meet Mr.Bass for the first time, albeit a very small version We were on the water for about 30 minutes before the combination of the life jacket not fitting well, his teeth hurting, and being tired got the best of him. His big sister had to check on him to make sure he was okay though. Can't wait until he's old enough to go with me. The lake we were on will probably be one of our main destinations as it's a dink factory and loaded with bluegills and sunfish as well. I got out that night and it was flat calm and perfect out. Fishing was a little slow but I still boated 18 and the quality was pretty good. One of my first fish of the night was also my biggest at 4.29lbs on a homemade swinging football head and Ol' Monster. A couple minutes later I caught my second biggest of the night at 3.83lbs on a homemade bladed jig that is showing some serious wear after doing lots of work this summer but still catching like it was new Another solid Ol' Monster fish. This is why I love bladed jigs, they choke those things! Hard to get any leverage to toss a bait when they're stuck like that. I had to leave right as the sun was getting up so I could watch my son but I got a little Slammer fish right before I left.

  4. "Treat others as you would want to be treated." That is just simple common sense. In my state I am allowed to fish docks so I just make sure I don't hit someone's boat. If I am an inaccurate caster that means I don't cast near the boat at all. If the dock owner tells me he or she doesn't allow anyone to fish his dock, I respectfully move along. Ethical actions and the law often do not walk hand in hand. Just because the law states that I am allowed to do it, doesn't mean I should do it. Just be nice to people and try to see things from their perspective. If you really strive to do this, you may find out that some of your most strongly held convictions are not as accurate as you thought.

  6. People ask me, why is it that I fish so much... I give them a generic answer, like "because it's fun". This morning, though, I feel compelled to let out why I do what I do. I guess I can break it down into two main subjects; the sport/hunt , and the water itself. The first one is easy, as the pursuit of fish provides an entertainment value shared by many. The latter, however, goes much deeper than satisfying the need for fun. The water doesn't disappoint. When people let you down, the water won't. "Best friends" may never call, but the water calls me constantly, and never fails to answer my call. The water is always there for you, when no one else is. It has the uncanny ability to take whatever problems you go to it with, and wash them away. Like you, the water has secrets, if you take the time to listen to them. And oftentimes, the water will unlock secrets about you to yourself.

  7. Decided enough is enough and making some changes job my life. Changing my MOS in the army to blackhawk mechanic and gonna see where that takes me either crew chief or pilot. Starting a strict diet and work out regiment to get back into my deployment weight and shape of not better then that. I just moved and live across the street from the YMCA and a few miles closer to work and will be running to work till the snow starts falling. I've lawyered up and what's the saying "why are divorces so much? Because they are worth it" well at $300 an hour I sure hope so and that's with my employee discount because said lawyer owns the company I work for and happens to be ranked one of the best lawyers in NY. Gonna start fishing and hunting more along with starting some new hobbies shooting bow competitions, making lures, got some gun smithing projects and getting back into paintball. Time to finally make me happy and stop being a miserable ***** lol.

  10. In the State of Michigan, the lakefront property owner has legal possession of the land. This includes the dry shoreline and the bottom of the lake. They also have the sole right to ownership of any dock, swim platform, or pier attached to that land, wet or dry. The State of Michigan(and by extension all of it's residents) owns the water and the fish that swim in it. Any boater or fisherman has the right to navigate (or fish) anywhere on the water itself, but they have no right to access the private property of the lakefront owner. Whether anyone likes it or not, boaters or fisherman do not have any right to use that property. When it comes to disrespectful people, its a large club and there are members from all the different users. To join that group, a person simply needs to think that their rights outweigh those that others have.

  11. May I suggest everyone contact their respective state game and fisheries department for their input on fishing private docks. There are legal actions regarding water rights all over the country with different rulings and outcomes. In Virginia you can legally fish any dock, pier or boathouse, etc. However, you cannot throw a wake if you are within 50-feet of any dock, pier or boathouse. I personally have encountered only one individual who did not want anyone fishing in front of his house. This is on the hot side of One Fish Anna. The guy releases his two labs and then throws sticks to them in the water, having them dive in to get and retrieve the sticks. He does this all year long and it is fun to float past his house and watch him run out with the dogs. What he does not understand is that no one has ever caught a fish off his breakfront so it is a few minutes of entertainment for us. I have had a friend threatened with a shotgun on Lake Gaston by a landowner. The local sheriff went to the guy's house and had a heart-to-heart talk with him and so far no more problems. We speak with people on their docks as we fish around them and have not found any jerks so far. We have also not encountered any topless ladies but we are still hopeful our luck will change one day.

  13. Had a little time to kill before going in to work today. So I stopped by the farm pound to make a few cast. The where really active today, but anyway I caught this one bass and it had a monster belly on it, almost looked deformed. None of the other bass had anywhere near the belly this one had. My question is he just eating that well or is there a possible problem with the fish. Just had to share

  14. So I started out this weekend again at Clear Lake looking for more night time bass. The daytime bite has been all but nonexistant for me the last month or so which is why I've been fishing all night long as much as possible. This evening started out a bit different. Right off the bat I started chunking an 8" Triple Trout around a grass bed that drops into a 13ft deep channel. I knew one little section of the grass that was right on the break line also contained about a dozen basketball sized boulders clumped together. I've been catching a couple decent fish a night there so I figured I would see what the swimbait could do. On the first cast I had a hook up almost immediately. The fish freight trained into the grass and managed to pull loose. On the next cast I stuck a giant!! The fish came up twice and jumped regardless of how low I was keeping my rod tip as I pulled back. She was easily 9lbs but I don't think she would have gone over ten. She made one last jump beside the kayak as I stretched out with the net to scoop her. The bait came free in the air and I reached as far as I could but just couldn't quite get under her before she landed back in the water to swim away. I let the area settle for a bit and made a big circle casting around other isolated grass clumps. There were no takers. Eventually I made it back to where I had the first two hits. Again I cast into the small pocket and was slammed within a couple turns of the reel handle. This one stayed buttoned up and weight 5lbs 7oz. She was to be my biggest fish of the "night". Over all the average size was much smaller this weekend that it has been for the past month. I caught a decent number of fish (somewhere around 16) but there were a good number of 15-17" fish. I only had two others Friday night that went over 18" and I didn't catch a single channel cat this time even though I packed a cooler to take a few home if I did happen to get into them again. Then today it was back to the saltwater. I'm trying to stock up on some fresh fish for a fish fry to treat the guys I work with. I headed just up the road to Timber Cove again. The forecast was for 5ft swells at 8sec with a gradual calming throughout the day. I launched into the "worst" of it at 7am and started catching fish right off the bat. There was a huge school of mackeral that were covering the cove like nothing I've ever seen before. They were were almost so thick that you could walk on them!! LOL Everything was busy feeding on them and there was constantly something to watch. Sea lions were rushing through the schools, a couple 6-8ft blue sharks were working the edges, the birds were diving, and larger predatory fish were busting up through them from underneath. I even watched a small lingcod go airborn after a couple of them. I worked a couple different colors of the 6" Big Hammer swimbaits and caught fish pretty steadily all day. The highlights of the trip were a 35" smurf lingcod, a 21.5" cabezon, and a 17.5" vermillion rockfish. Be on the lookout for my next report as I took vacation days on this coming Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday!!

  16. Good discussion. Yes, I do generally put the scale under the gill plate, but for whatever reason, not all bass are created equal and it does slide out at times. I am ordering a Fish Grip and I think that will solve any and all problems - most importantly, the one about burying trebles in my fingers.

  19. Just looks like a very healthy fish. Coloring looks good, eyes are good, scales look good, fins look good. I see no reason to question his health. If that fish were a human, he looks like the type of person who eats 2 Big Mac's for lunch every day.

  20. Occasionally when I am fishing a lake and in a search pattern, I will fish docks. To be honest, I usually am pretty embarrassed to do it and I feel like when I have to stoop to dock fishing, I must be out of ideas. I'd much rather be fishing a spot that is free of the human touch.

  22. Not having access to the other forum mentioned by the OP, it would be impossible to fully understand how he came upon his opinions. The only thing I can say is that as a boat owner in these types of tournaments, I became very tired of the non-boaters. I got fed up with people who showed up expecting me to act as their guide for the day, who thought I should furnish lunch and ice cold drinks, and who saw no problem spraying their "Lunker Dunk" all over my back deck and motor cover. The worst non-boater I ever drew whined all day that he couldn't afford to pay the club's mandated boater fee, and then expected me to drive him home afterwards, even though he lived 30 miles in the other direction. When I hear the OP say that the non-boater shouldn't be responsible to cover the costs associated to owning a boat, he should understand that age old saying; "You Get What You Pay For!". This was the rule I lived by for years when it came to fishing draw tournaments. If a non-boater showed the desire to help pay for the day's costs, who came prepared, and who respected my property had a much better chance at getting equal access to the best fishing spots. The bottom line is that your tournament entry fee only pays for your chance to win something back. What you invest beyond that determines where you fish.

  24. Back to the original post, if you have lost almost half of your line, there is no need to take all the line off and completely fill the spool. Just strip off enough line so that your 10 or 15 yards past your longest cast (when the spool is full) and tie on your new line and fill the spool from that point. You will save a lot of money just adding line from that point as need be rather than filling the entire spool. If you do this, you can get 5 or 6 refills from a 300 yard spool rather than 2 or 3.

  25. Finally had time for this project. Started off finding the midline of the boat. A length of braid line tied to the rear set post, ran all the way to the nose whilst going over the center of the front deck seat post hole. Masked out the template. Measured, remeasured, adjusted, remeasured, and measured for the last time. Then, a perfectly good hole in the deck of my boat. Hope I didnt mess up. Time for a victory bottle of suds. I finished the Ommegang while the little lady ran to Lowes for a longer drain tube. Drilled my holes, ran the drain hose, buttoned her down. Deployed the TM to find the best angle for the cable. Didnt want a hard twist or bind. I had to cut through one and a half braces, flooring still seems very sturdy. Not a hard project. And will be very well worth it. I also put the cover/shield back on my gas tank. Trimmed 1/3 of it off so the gas line would be in a good position, and not pinched.

  30. I only caught one bass with the frog today, probably about 1.5-2 lbs. The rod had no problem fighting the fish through the pads I threw my frog into, and was easily able to cast it far. With a quicker reel and thicker line, I should have a great setup for froggin! P.S. It sure is fun when a fish hits that frog!

  33. We used to catfish at night beside the shy beaver launch @ Raystown. Had a group of 5 guys, all just drunk as skunks, launch a ski type boat load their two coolers of beer and take off. Fairly normal, except the left their dog on shore! He hung out with us while we fished! Next thing you know, here comes a boat blowing threw the no wake right at the ramp. About 50 feet out they cut the engine and drive it right up the ramp!!!! Ends up the drunk guys forgot to put the plug in! The boat was like 3/4 of the way up on shore and it took all seven of us tp push it back into the lake (after they put the plug in)!! They did take the dog the second time!!!! Takes all kinds, Jim

  35. I pulled another all- nighter on one of my favorite summer time lakes last night. It was warm, humid and flat calm all night. The complete stillness of these nights only makes them that much more intense. Conditions were perfect for tossing a jig & craw and that produced at least half the bass I landed. A single bladed spinner bait was the other half of this two pronged approach. The bite was slow to come on but once that quarter moon sunk behind the trees, both the brown & green bass found my baits quite appealing. I like that. Several fish coughed up whole and what looked like recently gobbled up crayfish, which gave me confidence to keep tossing the jig. Right at day break I started zipping a square bill crank around and managed a few more fatties. Didn’t catch anything really over-sized but on a night like that – they’re all good ones. On a separate note – Though I’ve been out with it a couple of times previously, this was the first night trip with the new Pinnacle rod & reel set up. I’ll be doing a review on it at the end of the month. Still need a bit more time with it first but my initially impressions are quite good. More to follow on that. A-Jay

  36. Being I used to run a charter boat, one thing I wouldn't ever go cheap on would be a quality set of Binos. To me $750 for a set o Fugee's would be a steal considering Ziess's run about $2000. But there quality def matters.

  37. The Black *** is also a great rod if you don't mind spending another $20. Also Falcon's line of Bucco Rods are right at $100 and have 6 of those. When from the H20's to Falcon's and also have a Black ***. Looking to get a Green *** as well. And can't forget BPS line of rods either. You can find lots of choices there for under a $100 in almost any length and power you're wanting.

Well she took a bunch of to the neighborhood pool and left a green pumpkin black senco right next to the water. Well, the next day two older people came with their grandson, and he ran to it a yelled,"Oh, look a slug!" The grandpa went over to it, while the grandma was freaking out, started poking at with his kife and cut it in half. A few min. later, the kid went over to it and picked up and started chasing his grandma with it! The grandma made him throw it in the bushes. That had to be the funniest thing fishing related Ive seen in a while!

  43. One time I was bank fishing across from a boat ramp. Three Older guys pull up in there jon boat.. They were drunk as all get out. It took them probably 30 minutes to load all there gear, rods, reels, coolers etc. They backed the boat in the water got it off the trailer and one of them tied the front end of the boat to a pole. All three got in fired up there little motor and punched it. The rope had gotten underneath the boat and none of them untied it. I swear I set there as the boat nose dived, and went straight down. And the back end came out of the water and stood up, It threw the guy in the back running the motor over the other 2 guys into the water all three were thrown out. I guess two of the guys couldn't swim and were yelling and screaming like little girls, Help!! Help!! I'm drowning beating and thrashing in the water. The other guy had gotten out of the water and was on the bank, He started yelling at his buddies to shut the hell up and just stand up the water was only 3 feet deep. They stood up walked out of the water there buddy who could swim did the best he could to get there rods and reels back, they loaded it all back on the truck and left. True Story!! I have never laughed so hard in my life.

  45. Thinking back on this it was a very scary moment at first but turned out to be hilarious. Was fishing a local electric only lake, nobody else on the water that I could see. All the sudden I hear yelling and turn around to see this GIANT white cloud, just pure white 100 yards behind me in the water. Had no clue what was happening. About 30 seconds later it cleared and there was a little jon boat with two guys in it. Turned out one of the guys wires had shorted and started a small fire and the guy emptied the entire fire extinguisher just spraying it everywhere. They electrical taped it up and kept on going, white clothes and all.

  46. Pulled up to the boat ramp seen a large group of people standing on the dock looking at the water I walked up to see what was going on and the only thing I seen was a car radio antenna sticking out of the water. It seems an older gentleman forgot to put the plug in the boat and the weight of the sinking boat pulled his older model station wagon down the ramp and into the water that's right boat, motor, trailer and car under water. The local paper even posted a picture of the antenna sticking out of the water.

  47. We launch the used boat my son just purchased. The motor wouldn't start as the water is coming up threw a crack in the main beam. I left the boat. The son knew the leak was there he has been out before in it. He tried to fix it with cheese cloth and resin. It didn't work. I cleaned the crack and applied the resin by itself and repaired it. Another time my son forgot to put the plug in the boat. We were on the ramp. My son is very smart with two degrees in robotics and engineering. Some exceptionally smart people lack some common sense. I worked with engineers for most of my life the PhD's are even worse.
