  1. Another option for next time is to use a product called Permethrin. It's a clothing soak/spray. You put it on your CLOTHES only (not your skin) and it repels ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes for 6 weeks from the time of application. That includes 1 wash per week. I have about 4 fishing outfits I cycle and all are treated. I have yet this year to find any bug of any kind on me or my clothes - no mosquitoes, no ticks, nothing..... Might give it a try. They sell it at my local Wally World in the camping section. I have seen it at Dicks and Gander Mtn. too.

  2. Hi, I am new to the forum. I grew up bass fishing in Florida, I have lived up here for 8 years and have not done much fishing here. Looking to start doing more fishing now. Can anyone tell me some good places to bank fish for bass within 15 or 20 miles of Milford and what lures to use? Any advice is appreciated.

  8. Anybody have a Citica? I picked one up for, I hope, a steal. I stopped by my local Dicks Sporting Goods and they had an additional 25% off clearance. Bottom line, I picked one up for $44 with tax and the sales guy spooled it with some 50lb Powerpro. I intended to eventually Frankenstein this reel. I'll start with the bearings and work my way through it. They also had a Daiwa Lexa 100HSA for $75 and Shimano Crucial Rods for $90. If my wife was not with me, I would have gone hog wild. Thanks for you thoughts on the Citica....

  10. Haha. I stand corrected. Sorry about that man. When you spend as much time as I do reading about fishing and constantly seeing "catch and release" everywhere, it's like muscle memory. You do it without even thinking.

  11. Rods are designed for "fishing." A medium St Croix makes a great rod for weightless plastics and light t-rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits, etc. The medium-heavy works better around cover and with heavier baits, in my opinion.

  12. Ehhhh Idk about their hard bodied swimbaits... I can't catch a fish on them to save my life, they look great in the water though

  14. Never tried those but their jigs are phenomenal, as are their jointed swim baits. I may have to goto Academy tomorrow lol.

  15. I love Academy's lipless crank baits. Great quality, good hooks right out of the package, and like you said, tons of colors. I wish they had something comparable to a 6xd though.

  16. As C&R stated, make sure your lure weights are in line with your rods rating. Also check to make sure the brakes on the reel are adjusted correctly. If your throwing a bunch of baits of different weights on one setup, you'll probably have to adjust accordingly to different lures.

  17. Academy crank baits are very good for the money. Very good. Online most of their crank baits are on sale for $3 which is a steal.

  18. When I eat that. It makes my farts ten time worst. They are even worst when I am on a high fiber high protein diet. Coming form my butt. Nothing can beat my beer farts though. Ask my buddy about them. We were hanging out one night night. It got so bad he went out side. About 30 minutes later he went to the bathroom. All I hear is swear words. My fart found its way to his bathroom in the back of his house.

  19. Condensation dont affect Lawn mowers, Tillers, and other 2 strokes quite like a boat. I did have bad gas in mine when I bought it. Only affect it had was start ups. Every time was like a cold start. Fresh gas, additives fixed it. With that said, I would still replace the gas, and lines to new EPA lines. Draining the gas, and replacing lets you know how old it is, what additives are in it, and if its PURE gas and not an Ethanol Blend.

  23. Now is the perfect time to go out and see where the kayaks limits are. Wear your PFD, and go tip it a dozen ir so times. Practice re-entry in both shallow and deep water. Life saving experience right there

  24. I agree with Fly. Sharp hooks. I also use braid for mainline and always a leader tied on of various pound test. So there's a little stretch in the leader, but the braid provides that snap into the jaws (for the most part). Thicker hooks, I'm learning, like those on pre-made swimbaits, require a bit more heft in setting. If you are used to hooksets like you see the pros do in their bass boats, you might need to adjust a little bit so as not to jar yourself over the side. Sweeping to the side, reeling down and lifting are probably what I use the most, never an issue any more. As you get your sea/yak legs, it'll be more and more comfortable for you. And in terms of comfort with your yak, there's something called secondary stability (which you may already be familiar with, so in case not-->). It is when you are tipping but hit a point where you stop going further and find a secondary stability. Learn where that is, which can help with your confidence in hook setting. At least it helped me.

  25. Yeah, I've been there a few times since my folks are retired there Where are you staying? Regardless, you can find bass in just about any of the ponds in the plantations. Yes, keep an eye out for gators especially when landing or releasing fish. But with that said, my recommendation would be to fish the salt. Your bass gear will do just find for redfish and trout, and many of the ponds down there are tide-fed and brackish. A 1 lb redfish will kick your butt much more than a 5lb bass. PM me if you'd like more info on the fishing, or if you like a salt guide recommendation. My avatar fish was caught in HHI, and the 'poon are just starting to show.

  27. Well, rod mounts are an entirely different animal. I actually don't have any in my yak as of now. Too often I would catch a rod behind me when casting when I used to mount them vertically on my milk crate (which I no longer carry). So I now lay my rods in front of me. Every rod is horizontal. That said, you can, with practice, adjust your casting so as not to catch rods behind you. With 7 foot rods it may actually be easier. I use short rods, like in the 6 foot range, so I'm probably more likely to catch stuff behind me than you would be. At least I think so. And I think you'll have a lot of fun being able to add all the accessories you mentioned. You'll be armed for hogs, Christian. Good luck, man!

  28. From your avatar you are a shore angler. Without a boat it's difficult to retrieve any crankbait from a snag. From shore I suggest using 30# for spinning or 40# braid for baitcasting tied directly to the lure so you can pull snagged lures free, not with your rod or reel but a piece of broom stick to wrap the line around. I use Norman crankbaits a lot, good reliable lures at a reasonable price, DD14 is a good size to start with. What rod/reel combo do you plan on using? Tom

  30. I have been kayak fishing for about 5 years or so now and i haven't really noticed much of a difference in my hook setting success. I am pretty vigilant about having sticky sharp hooks though. I also use braid pretty mud exclusively so i don't have to worry about line stretch either. Once you get a little more comfortable in your kayak you will find you can set the hook however you want in whatever position for the most part. I have never flipped any of my kayaks while setting a hook from various different positions.

  31. Like said earlier the KVD 1.5s are great for beginners but if you have a local academy I'd reccomend the H20 CRS I Like them just as much as the KVDs (practically the same lure) but they are half the price at 3$ If you want a good budget rod I'd reccomend the Berkeley cherry wood HD (25$) and any reel will work but I prefer a 6.4 for most of my cranking
    1 point
  32. Go to Walmart, buy a couple of KVD1.5s, maybe a Bandit 100 or 200 in whatever natural color they have (if your walmart has the 'root beer' color, grab it - that's my fav bandit color). Each bait is about $5.75 and will catch you plenty of fish. For around $25 bucks you can have four excellent cranks. Since you are just starting, and you want to go cheap, forget about a specific rod/reel for right now, just go with whatever combo you already use, it will work fine. I prefer MH with a fast tip, not the typical setup for cranks, but it works for me. The hardest part about cranking is being willing to throw them where they might get hung up. Throw them where there are rocks or wood structure and deflect them off of everything you can. Practice in the shallows to get the feel of things and so you can easily retrieve snags. The KVD1.5s and Bandit 100s have square bills and will get hung up less often, but snags are always a danger when cranking.

  34. night fish those places after the skiers are gone and also 4am-8am. It sucks but they have every right to ski , just a we do to fish. I understand there is a lot more disrespect these days than 30 yrs ago, there are also a lot more people. also remember there are a lot of big fish in small water. small kayak and no gas motor water. no tourneys on small water, peaceful , easy , no pressure.

  35. True, though I doubt if it's the reason you hint at. They're being discontinued in the US because they didn't sell well enough here. While they remain in production under various guises for the JDM. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the T3 platform except for the fact that Daiwa introduced a whole lot of new technology in one reel series, and the US market didn't know how to handle it. Flaws were reported shortly after it came out, such as people reporting grooving in the front of the reel from line digging in, but frankly after seeing the T3 in person I've absolutely no idea how that happened except due to user error, from holding the line and forcing it down against the face of the reel while battling a fish. Otherwise, you'd have to be fishing the reel on a noodle in order for the rod to flex enough to let the line dig into the front plate. However, the biggest issue with the T3 was the price tag; $250-$430 for a single reel doesn't sit well for a lot of people, especially one with a "plastic" frame. The T3 line was the first to sport a carbon frame, and many people viewed it as nothing more than glorified graphite. Which it may or may not be, but in light of the fact that the reel feels just fine to me so far, and that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of other satisfied users of the T3/T3B, and that the Shimano Chronarch Ci4+ has been such a raging success, I think carbon frames are here to stay. Exactly what issues have you encountered with the T3/T3B line?

  41. If you are seeing them then they must be actively moving around. I'd try a buzzbait or topwater popper early in the morning, late in the evening, or when its cloudy. Just keep throwing it around until you find some fish. If there's too many weeds then use a frog. If its windy you could couple that with a spinnerbait as a one-two punch to try and locate some fish. After you find where the fish are holding you can fish a craw or worm or whatever you want.

  43. Just got back from our week long vacation at The Rock. Had a great time, caught a lot of fish. FIshing was tough but we caught enough to make it fun. Most fish came in 15-25 FOW on either finesse jigs or the Ned. The best part of the week was getting my 22 month old son into the water and on the boat. He had a blast swimming, and he even started to figure out how to dog paddle which was very exciting. Our resort First night, both fish on a 3/8 oz football shakyhead and big texan color pit boss Drop shot around the KC bridge Healthy spot on the Ned in the cut next to our dock Chunky 14" smallie on the Ned out of one of the boat slips on the dock during a storm. There were 5 or 6 other fish (mix of smallies and spots) that came up with it, my dad flipped the Ned in front of them and had a nice spot on for a couple seconds but lost it. Pretty cool to watch happen in the clear water. Another one during the storm on a football shaky and mag finesse worm My dad with the biggest of the week, probably around 3 1/2 pounds and a very healthy fish. Caught on a football jig off the front of the dock. The fish had apparently swallowed a wobble head and had almost passed it, the head was sticking out it's butt but the hook was stuck inside. You can barely see it in the picture, will probably end up killing the fish. Another off the front of the dock on a finesse jig, around 3 lbs. Got this one Friday morning on a finesse jig in 20' around some standing timber. Same morning on the Ned, fish was a little goofy looking One of my last fish, a stocky LM off the bridge to the dock on the Ned My boy was a fan of it

  44. Story of the Outhouse There was a little boy who lived in the country. The family still used an outhouse and the little boy hated it because it was so hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter and smelled all the time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and the boy was determined that one day he would push that old outhouse straight into the creek. So, one day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen and the little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. He found a large pole and started pushing. Finally, after much effort, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away. That night his dad told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. The boy knew that meant a spanking ... so he asked why. The dad replied, "Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn't it son?" The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, "Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn't get into trouble because he told the truth ..." The dad replied, "Well, son, George Washington's father probably wasn't in the cherry tree!"

  46. An older lady named Ida was somewhat lonely since her cat died and decided she needed another pet to keep her company. So, off to the pet shop she went. She searched and searched. None of the pets seemed to catch her interest, except this ugly frog. As she walked by the jar he was in, she looked and he winked at her. He whispered, 'I'M LONELY, TOO. BUY ME AND TAKE ME HOME. YOU WON'T EVER BE SORRY.' Ida figured what the heck! She hadn't found anything else. So she bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat beside her. As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog whispered to her 'KISS ME AND YOU WON'T BE SORRY..'! So, Ida figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog. IMMEDIATELY the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy, young, handsome prince. THE PRINCE THEN RETURNED IDA'S KISS. SUDDENLY IDA FELT HERSELF TRANSFORMING FROM HIS KISS. NOW CAN YOU GUESS WHAT IDA TURNED INTO? COME ON GUESS! * * * * * SHE TURNED INTO the first Holiday Inn SHE COULD FIND!!! She's old...... NOT DEAD!!!!!

  47. A guy walks into the local welfare office for his monthly check. He marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi. You know, I just HATE coming in here drawing welfare month after month. I'd really much rather have a job". The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur-bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter. You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You'll have a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is $200,000 a year." The guy says, "You're bullsh__ting me!" The social worker says, "Well ......Yeah, but you started it."

  48. This is such a touching story, I thought you would enjoy it. A-Jay The Last Kiss Back on January 9th, a group of Pekin , Illinois bikers were riding west on I-74 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Murray Baker Bridge. So they stopped. George, their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the State Trooper who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says, "Hey Baby..... whatcha doin' up there on that railin'?" She says tearfully, "I'm going to commit suicide!" While he didn't want to appear 'sensitive', George also didn't want to miss this 'be-a-legend' opportunity either so he asked..."Well, before you jump, Honey-Babe... Why don't you give ole George here your best last kiss?" So, with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that.... And it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one. After they breathlessly finished, George gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper, and then says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had, Honey! That's a real talent you're wasting, Sugar Shorts. You could be famous if you rode with me. Why the heck are you committing suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl." It's still unclear whether he jumped or was pushed.

  49. The minister called the children to the alter for their Sunday children's talk, as he has done for all the years he has been the church's pastor. The little darlings rushed to the front of the church and sat down as the old minister took his place at the top of the alter stairs. He thanked them for coming to see him and told them that since Easter was approaching he wanted to speak to them about the resurrection. "Do any of you know what a resurrection is?" he asked the kids. "Yes!" a young boy exclaimed as he raised his hand in excitement. "So tell us, my son, what is the resurrection?" the minister question the young man. "Well, I am not too sure but I do know that if your resurrection lasts more than four hours you need to see a doctor." It took almost 15 minutes to restore order in the church.
