  1. Got myself a new fishing buddy. She is a blue tick coonhound. We named her Cara. Here is to many happy fishing trips. Who else has a fur fishing partner?

  4. Before you try to insinuate that what I said was stupid, you should try talking to a chef, a food critique, or anyone else with a very good palate. If you know what you are doing you can absolutely taste the difference between a cow that has been grass fed vs one that has been grain fed. There is an Iowa farmer that feeds his pigs acorns and other nuts. The meat is extremely high priced and highly sought after because of the unique nutty flavor in the meat. But I guess if you have only eaten cheap fed beef, trough fed pigs, and boxed mac & cheese then you won't understand the differences in taste. Similarly I can taste the difference between a spring, summer, and fall bass. Spring they taste great, very mild and just fantastic. Summer they get the weedy taste at times, but out of open water they are still good, the texture can be a little soft if you don't bleed them and get them on ice immediately. Fall bass taste like shad (if you have ever eaten a sammich after taking a shad off your hook you know the taste!). I guess that's why people say there's no taste difference between a porterhouse and a sirloin and that they all taste like "steak". You have to be born with the ability to disearn different tastes in what you are eating or you will never understand and will never pick up on the "you are what you eat" saying.

  5. My main suggestion is anyone following this post take notes on how NOT to buy a boat. It's very obvious this boat/ motor was not test run and motor work is way to expensive to buy one of unknown condition. Had it been test run, the the seller would have been responsible for making sure it was in good, running condition. Now, you are pretty much SOL with any problems you may have. If the seller said he would fix any problems you, good luck on that one. Just having the carbs cleaned and other problems that may be with the fuel lines can run $300-$500. Add a new water pump and you are close to $800, and that's just taking care of very likely problems. That's nothing to do with other problems it may have, up to the motor itself being bad. I wish you the best and hope it turns out well for you, but being new to the world of boats and motors, you have set yourself up for possibly a very bad experience.

  6. Long line a 6xd, they come in Tenn. Shad. Or if you, or your gear, is up to it, a 10xd will get down that far on a long cast, and it also comes in Tenn. Shad.

  11. I usually throw mine over the side to keep exposed hooks out of the boat. Lots going on after you've caught one whether in a tournament or not including putting them on the bump board, culling, stowing the net, etc.. The last thing I want to worry about is getting hooked. I'll worry about my bait after I'm ready to start fishing again.

  12. I bought a milk crate last month and finally got around to buying a PVC pipe today and some plastic ties. So here it is! I put tape on the lip of the rod holders so they won't scratch up my reels. I can't wait to try out. I might cut slips in the pipes so my rods can slide down and stay in place but I'm going to try it out first before I do any more cutting. Most of my fishing is done on strip pits so there's not much wave action so I don't think I need to bungee my rods down.

  14. I have seen a thread now and then asking about the Powell Timax but I haven't been able to find any reviews using the search function. I bought a Powell Timax 734 HCF in December of last year and this is my review of the rod. I know some of you could have used this earlier but I don't like to review anything until I become accustomed to its idiosynchracies so that I can determine if such things are faults, or something that may be to my benefit once I become familiar with it. First of all, the rod is built of high quality components and my rod doesn't have any blemishes whatsoever. The rod is 7' 3" long with a heavy action and a fast tip. Of the 10 line guides, the last 9 are micro guides. I tie a fluorocarbon leader to braid on this rod using an Alberto knot and, surprisingly, I have had no issues with the knot hanging on the micro guides. At first glance, some have complained about the aluminum handle but I like the look, myself. This blue rod looks absolutely brilliant with my green Curado 200 E7. (LOL, not.) I have been using the Timax for soft plastics and jigs, and for me, the functionality of this rod makes one forget about looks. I place it in a class with the G.Loomis GLX series for plastics and jigs, which, considering its price, is to be expected. In fact, I think it might be slightly more sensitive than my MBR 844C GLX rods. I can feel everything my lure touches and until you get used to the rod, it can sometimes be a bit disconcerting. I am so used to my Mag GLXs and how things feel with those, that to feel anything different has led to some unwitting hooksets into things other than fish while becoming familliar with the rod. If you are one to fish brushpiles and like to work a jig or plastic through thick branches, this rod is almost like having eyes underwater to see exactly what the jig is doing. I don't have a GLX JWR rod to compare it to, though I do have an NRX 854C JWR which I haven't used much at all yet. I expect the NRX to be the sensitivity king, but we will see. This Timax could give any rod that I have used a run for its money in that regard. One complaint I have seen and heard about quite often with Powell rods longer than 7 feet is the heaviness of the tip. I have noticed this as well but it is not an issue with the 734 HCF. With a Curado on board it balances at the hook keeper which is 1 3/8 inches in front of the reel. I measured the length from the butt of the handle to the middle of the reel and it is practically the same for the MBR 844C GLX, the NRX 854C JWR, and my Timax. The GLXs balance at approximately the same point as the Timax, while the NRX balances almost 2 inches in front of the reel, though I haven't noticed any tip heaviness with any of the rods I used in this comparison. The GLXs and the Timax are fitted with the same model Curado while the NRX is fitted with a standard Shimano Chronarch. In summary, for $349.99 this is an awesome rod. It is 40 dollars below the standard price of my MBR 844C GLX and $85 - $100 dollars cheaper than a G.Loomis GLX JWR rod in the 7' 1" length. It provides similar performance to these rods in my opinion. For you Powell afficionados, this rod can hang with the big boys.

  15. Holy Moly. My son let his stinky friend come in to play today. Sweet Mother Mary, this 7 year old straight up blew up my bathroom. That boy stinks like a man! I'm not completely sure he ain't a 20year old midget posing as a child. The Porto Johns at work don't even smell as bad as this and those sometimes go 6days between cleanings. Something ain't right with this boy. That smell could gag a walrus! Heck the poor dog was scratching at the door trying to get out of the apartment. I was worried my skin was gonna melt when I went to hose the room down with febreeze. Needless to say stinky ain't allowed to use our bathroom anymore. Hell his mom probably won't let him use their bathroom so he goes around and uses everyone else's. If it was my child I would make him poop in the yard. Birds may start falling from the sky, but that's a small price to pay

  16. I have to admit, I had a couple of bass filets the other night and they tasted just like weeds! They are what they eat. Fortunately, I had a steak in the fridge so I threw it on the grill. Dang thing tasted just like a bale of hay! They are what they eat. Still hungry, I drove to the meat market. Asked the butcher what the pigs ate where he got his pork chops from. Gave up on that idea! They are what they eat. Still not giving up, I drove to the seafood store. I was halfway to the door when I realized that anything that swam in salt water would be like biting off a chunk from a salt block! They are what they eat. Since then I've been on a strict diet of Mac & Cheese, but I leave out the cheese part. I don't need any of the dairy products that those darn grass eating give up. It's Udderly Disgusting!

  17. One of my favorite pictures of my wife. We were fishing a Bassresource KC area get together as a team when she caught her PB smallmouth that weighed 3.96 pounds on a tiny Luck E Strike crankbait with a light action rod and 6lb test. It fought forever and jumped so many times I never thought we'd get that fish in the boat. She was so excited and happy to catch it she spent the next 10 minutes calling everyone and sending pictures to them.

  26. Doesn't shock me at all.....my 4 year old has been known to clear out our downstairs as it wafts down our hallway and into the living room. I told him to use the fan when he is in there and he says no daddy, it is too noisy. The kid eats a lot of fruit veggies so that may be the culprit.....

  29. A 7# on a black spinnerbait at night. No pictures since it was caught in 1989 and had an old style film camera back then and picture has been lost. Got it on the wall the only bass I have kept in 45 years of fishing.

  32. Don't see why not. I fish a number of different sizes of spinning reels...but the size I use the most is a "25" size Pflueger Supreme - basically equivalent to a 1000 size Shimano. Just as you were planning to do, I've used mostly 15lb and 20lb braid with 10 to 15lb leaders on this reel. As of today, that reel has brought in 2,595 fish - almost all bass. Power/torque? Not a problem for bass. As iabass8 just mentioned, you don't winch fish in with this type of tackle - but if that's what you want to use - it gets the job done. Here's a 4 pounder that matches your target weight range: Here's a 7.4lb LMB reeled in by that 25 size Pflueger last week: Works for me...

  35. I went broke trying it - 18 hrs a day no holidays - guys could mailorder back then and beat my prices - to small of a market where I was located - night crawlers and other live bait were my mainstays - but I made a lot of great friends and met some worthwhile characters.

  36. I'm assuming by light to medium cranks, you're talking about sqaurebills and medium diving cranks. Both of which are normally under 1/2 oz. I use a H2O Xpress Ethos 7' Medium Moderate Composite Cranker ($60) and a H2O Xpress Mettle ($60). I know that you were probably looking at the Orra Winch because of its 5.4:1 gear ratio, but unless you plan on throwing big deep divers the low gear ratio is unnecessary. The brake system on the Mettle will also be able to cast the light cranks better than the MagTrax brake system on the Orra Winch. I personally don't like the new series of Orra's. Don't get me wrong, I love both of my first gen Orra SX' s, but I prefer my 3 Mettles more so than any of the new Orra's. I know you may be sceptical of the H2O brand because it's Academy's house brand, but a quick search on the forum will show you just how much everyone loves them.

  40. Try slowing your presentation down maybe. For me, after I hop or drag a jig I will then let it sit for 10 seconds or so. After I let it sit, I start to shake it in place, and this is where the majority of my strikes happen.

  41. If yo are going to spend a lot of time bank fishing, I'd suggest that you get different gear rather than another rod & reel. If you are bank bound - a good pair of hip boots is invaluable - maybe a back pack style tackle bag would help you get more mobile. Rods & reels are important, but for most applications spinning gear beats bait casting gear for bank fishing applications. Look at what might get you better access to fishable water. That is my opinion.

  42. Everyone above me has covered the "basics" of choosing a color in most of the conditions you will encounter. My one piece of advise that's different from the "match the hatch" and "natural colors for clear water & dark colors for murky water" is don't be afraid to try out a odd, unnatural color. One of my "go-to" soft plastic baits is the bruised banana zoom trick worm. Not a naturally occurring color by any means, but it flat out catches fish for me. Moral of the story, is you won't know if it works until you throw it out there!
