  3. That's a terrible excuse for what they did. Killing another thing and laughing while doing it shows a lack of remorse, respect, and no concern of any consequences. Expecting their parents to right the situation is asking quite a bit anymore. Trust me, I make a living disciplining folks whose parents probably never did. I had a similar situation as the OP as well. Small public pond, mostly small fish but I had caught a few 3-4 pound fish and one beautiful 5 1/2 pounder that was very distinctly colored as she was almost completely black. It's an easy pond to fish from the bank and close to where I used to live so I was there often when I only had a short time to fish. One day when I got there I immediately noticed the smell of something rotten when I got out of my truck. I fished for awhile but curiosity got the best of me and I had to figure out where the smell was coming from. Didn't take long before I looked in the trash can by the edge of the water and there she was. Her jet black color had faded from baking in the sun, a dogwood sapling was jammed through her gills on one side and out the other. Looked like someone killed her just to get her out of the pond, probably thinking she was the reason they weren't catching any bluegills or crappie. They hadn't even filleted her, just thrown her in the trash to rot and waste. I've only been back to that pond once since and there was no sign of any bass bigger than 8". It probably didn't but in my mind the removal of the pond matriarch threw the balance off so badly that the gene for the bass to grow larger died with her and now there's nothing but small fish left.

  4. Well young man, I think you should consider your audience before making a post like this. Our members are first and foremost conservationists in a traditional sense, and that does not mean tree-huggers. Unless it is a matter of self-defense, killing animals just to watch them die is unacceptable and inexcusable.

  6. If you "roll" the fish and it feels your hook, come back an hour or two later. If you don't hit him with the hook and the bait comes flying back at you, just switch baits and they will usually bite again. If you fight the fish back to the boat and lose it, it might not bite again that day, just depends on how long you fought it. For example, if you fight a fish on 6lb test for a minute or so and the hook pulls, that fish will be much less likely to eat again than one that you hooked on a jig and had boatside after 3 or 4 turns of the handle before losing it. Then again, I fish a pond that has bass so stupid that you can release the fish, and cast to it when it is swimming away, it will bite again.

  8. Yes... I lost a fish that got me wrapped up in a submerged tree . In last desperation I pull the line trying to break free . But the branch broke free launching my chatterbait 90mph into the side of my leg . I had a sideways chatterbait bruise on my leg for 2 weeks , coolest bruise ever.

  9. I've seen this happen wat to many times myself. Yea a stern talking to most likely went in one ear and out the other. Parents that are to busy to raise their kids right or they just don't know themselves are (imo) are at fault here. I had the C.A.S.T. for kids yesterday and instead of a parent or guardian going with the kid, I had a young man from the C.C.C. (Cal conversaion corps) with me to help. I not only got to give the "challanged" kid "the thrill of his young life" this was said by his mother, but to (just as important to me) teach a young man not only about fishing but a few lessens on life. My little guy has ADHD and the boat ride was good enough for him, "I want to go fast!", so we did, all the way to 40 mph! The older young man was awed at just looking around at the lake, mts. the few deer, eagles, and turkey buzzards. "There's nothing like this where I came from" came out of his mouth and then he started to open up about where he came from - L.A. area - and how much he loved living up here. Right now lake Oroville is a mud hole, to him it's the biggest body of water he's ever been on. I put this on this thread instead of the C.A.S.T. thread to show there's hope for all youngsters if givin the chance. A little time, effort, and experance on our part can go a long way in a young person life.

  10. I fished my double secret pond with a guy who nailed a seven pounder and ran around the pond to get his camera to take a photo. Lucky for us the large female did OK when he released it. I was upset that all he wanted was a photo of the fish and he could have cared less if she lived or died. I guess that is what happens to self centered people.

  12. I was trying to break a jig off in shallow water one night when it came unsnagged and hit me in the forehead just above my right eye, amazing how much that hurt. The stretch of my line must have really sling-shot it back at me super fast because it felt like I'd just been sucker punched.

  13. Welcome to the jig addiction my friend! Before you know it you'll carry boxes full of hundreds of different jigs of all styles and colors while you continue to use the same ones for 90% of your fishing

  14. This time of year, we fish at night with jigs around docks. I wear clear safety glasses because you won't see a jig flying back at you. I got hit pretty hard one night in the forehead, that hurt.

  15. Her left pectoral fin is chopped off, must have been from a turtle or something. I have caught her 3 times, but the pond is right by my house and I fish it REALLY often, multiple times a week during the school year when I don't have time to go anywhere else after school. She absolutely will not eat plastics. Caught her once on an 8" bass (with the circle hook), once on a tiny crank pre-spawn, and once on a 6" BBZ swimbait.

  19. A guy walks into the local welfare office for his monthly check. He marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi. You know, I just HATE coming in here drawing welfare month after month. I'd really much rather have a job". The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur-bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter. You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You'll have a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is $200,000 a year." The guy says, "You're bullsh__ting me!" The social worker says, "Well ......Yeah, but you started it."

  23. Been doing fairly well in the waking hours of the morning, and decided to post a couple of my larger ones... 7lb, 7 oz... my birth weight lol, didn't get a length measurement on her. 4 or 5 lbs. Did not get a weight on this fish, but did measure length, 23 1/2 "... Still on the hunt for my DD! I'm finding 5am to 8am to be the most productive time in my waters.

  24. I've asked resources and done some research and havent been able to find a whole lot to help me. I fish a local pand that has a lot of largemouth bass in it ranging from 6oz all the way up to 5lbs, and I've had some pretty good luck with the smaller ones but I can't seem to land anything over a pound. I've thrown the most of my tackle box at them with no luck. it can only be fished from the banks, it's not terribly deep, its mostly open water with little to no cover and no underwater logs/trees/rocks, etc...and Im lost as to how i can land a pig!!

  25. I know this is pretty small compared to most of you folks' average fish, but it's a huge deal to me. I caught it at about 3:45am yesterday. I saw fishing blowing up the surface, tied on a little 1/8th oz. chartreuse buzzbait, and landed this one on the second cast. It hit like a ton of bricks, and thanks to what I've learned here, I waited till I felt the weight and set the hook. One of my goals for this year is now complete.

  26. What an awesome response.. made me laugh. lol The blind hog finding an acorn occasionally nearly done me in! lol. I too have been having the same trouble you're having being new to artifical lures and all, but with trial and error I guess we'll figure it out eventually. Not every person is going to have the same results using the same lure at a certain time. Bass change with the weather and water temps and it's so dang frustrating sometimes. I wish I had a bass fishing guru to turn to but instead I will turn to you guys and learn what I can from you. Loving this site so far!

  27. My dedicated squarebill rod is the TBC78MHM. Its a little unconventional compared to what most people use (7 to 7'2 in length). I prefer it because of the leverage, I throw my square bills into some nasty stuff.

  28. I've caught bass with guts full of bird and rodent bones. Pretty sure they can pass some plastic.

  29. As long as the hook and plastic don't make it to the bass's stomach it should be able to dislodge them eventially and will be fine. If a fish swallows a hook and/or plastic lure the hook can damage the fish (I've read the hook dissolving internally is a myth) and soft plastics do not digest in the fish. It is possible for a fish to pass the soft plastic whole but otherwise it just sits and sits in the GI tract for quite some time until it is either passed or regurgitated. I just hope the fish didn't have a long leader of line attached to the hook that might get caught up in heavy cover. Otherwise I'd say it will be fine. Bass are pretty resilient.

  31. Managed to get out this morning. Did a little wading on the Potomac up by Harpers Ferry. Managed 6 Smallies and a few more got off. Found a nice little hole that they were actively feeding on bait fish. It was pretty cool just to be around all the action.

  33. Having a peddle yak is like a 20ft with a 250hp. A regular yak is a 18ft aluminum with a 90hp. . They both can enter a tournament but only one can win. Both have different price points. No matter what ya got, you'll want more. If you have a bigger motor you'll be wondering what's on the next point rather that concentrating on where you are. Get what you can afford. It's simple really.

  39. I will agree with your comment about Gene helping by suggesting that the OP watch his video (we all know how great and informative his video's are). However with the OP's response of "but Im not looking to watch a video, i joined to actually get some help and opinons.", it seems increasingly more difficult to help someone that won't help themselves. Just an observation.

  40. I have a very simple approach. I start fishing when it's just light enough to see using a topwater. As the day gets brighter, I switch to a shallow-running crank. Later on, I may switch to a jig or worm/craw. I remain in shaded areas as long as possible. If there's a slight chop on the water I may use a spinnerbait or a double-propped surface lure. When the sun hits the area I'm fishing and gets hot enough to strip your hide, I go home. Do I catch a lot of fish?.....sometimes I do. Do I get skunked?.....EVERYBODY does at one time or another. Do I get big fish?.....well, every blind hog finds an acorn occaisionally. I just like being out there trying.

  42. I've grown up around reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles) and have owned many species of reptiles and I know people who own snapping turtles. Most of the big snappers you see are 50+ years old and to kill them just because you dont want to deal with them is completley wrong. If you catch a smaller one you can put them in a "trance" by "hovering" them under the water. If it is a bigger one or you are uncomfortable putting your hand near one (dont blame you) just cut the line just like a fish the hook will rust out. Killing snappers or any turtles for that matter in some states is treated like poaching and you WILL be given a serious fine for killing them. So just make things easier for your and the turtle and cut the line. It is a win-win situation.

  43. Y'all are over complicating the simplest season of the year! Summertime bass are more predictable cause they're home & except for a short trip to the kitchen table, they aint going nowhere. From fall feeding frenzies & all the way through post spawn they are on the move. RW nailed it, start on points! Try stroking a jig or t-rig

  44. Ah... summertime. Fishing can be spotty. Swallow a big patience pill and get out there as much as you can to increase your odds of catching fish. Some people pick up night fishing this time of year because the FL heat can be brutal. Mornings and late afternoons are always the more bearable times this time of year. If you do fish during the day, work cover methodically, and moving water is always a plus.
